Riviera 20 Rudder Assembly

Post by cewplatt » Mon Jan 12, 2015 1:19 am

Greetings,

I'm trying to determine the extent of what is original with the rudder hardware supplied with my boat. The attachment shows most of the components, maybe some can provide some help. The rudder shape doesn't match the plans obtained from the Mariner's Museum. There seems to be a sleeve which drops the rudder down a couple of inches which doesn't look right. The cross bar seems to match up to the original holes in the bilge stringers.

Thanks,

Check the casting numbers on your rudder and stuffing box/rudder post. Rudder should be 47053 and stuffing box 03213.
These are for hulls after R-20-500 which I believe was the start of the Riviera series.

The rest of your set up looks a little odd to me. The upper rudder shaft support (cross brace) looks to be metal and I'm pretty sure it was wood. Perhaps a Riviera owner would post a photo of theirs for your reference, however I would think the basic set up is pretty much universal among CC runabouts.

I don't think there should be a bushing/spacer on the rudder shaft.

Rudder is held up in place by a bronze sleeve with set screw and steering arm above that. These are above the internal cross brace that at present is the metal bracket. Mentioned only because I'm not seeing these in your photo.

Like Greg says look for the numbers. Delete the 3 at the end. The steel plate by the rudder port and the crossmember were added.
