Mahogony Plywood (Okume)

Post by Kade06 » Fri Jan 09, 2015 3:37 pm

So I found out Hundley's business on Lake Dallas is out of business and for sale. My hope was that he had a sheet of 1/2 inch okume because a year or two ago he was headed to Houston to buy some. So where is another good place to get a sheet of this? Also it seems they may be selling the inventory. May try and run down there tomorrow. Thanks for the help.

Wow....there must be a ton of stuff at Hundley's ......one of the oldest and longest running dealers around..back in the day

Hope some of that stuff ends up on ebay or etc.

You weren't kidding. A sheet was a 130 dollars and shipping was 210 dollars. Found a place in Houston that sells it>>>Clarks. Another question the people at Clark's said Okoume and Meranti plywoods is different. Is that the case and what did chris craft use on the Cavaliers in the bottom? I know the meranti is the veneer with the phillipine mahogany but what is the okoume??
Thanks guys.

I think the bottoms on Caveliers were CC marine fir plywood. CC had their own grading system for plywood that made theirs just a little better. Mostly it called for all the knots and voids to be filled.

If you're searching for plywood watch out for the new metric variety. Its just slightly undersized. 1/2 inch is like .030 less that 1/2 inch. And so on. I needed some 3/8 for my cabin top and had a hard time finding true 3/8.

Fir plywood is generally made in the US and measured by the inch. Occume, Meranti, and nice veneer plywood is generally made overseas and measured in millimeters.

I used fir the last time I replaced a piece in the bottom and I wasn't overly happy with it. It didn't match very well which I know the fish don't care. LOL. So the fir would be fine in yall's opinion? I can get that in Fort Worth.
Thanks

heck yeah...get a nice piece of marine fir and rock on...no need to have the replacement part last decades longer than the rest of the boat....a fallacy anyway.....fix it best you can with modern stuff and you will be ready to "go boating"!
