I have flipped the boat, and I am in the process of descrewing. Does anyone have advice or tips? Things I should be on the look out for?

If you are not going to re-use the planks a heavy duty wire wheel and drill work well for exposing the screws. Get a good respiratior and grind away. It is tedious work, be prepared. Keep the old planks you take off for patterns. Take lots of pictures before and after for reference when putting it all back together.

Wire brush was great, tedious work for sure. I was planning for down the road because I kept hearing the amount of screws it was going to take to rebuild. I didnt think about it is the same amount coming off.
Im glad the issue of the water line came up, am I crazy to think that I dont have to remove that plank with the water line on it? or should I just do it since I am doing the whole bottom anyway?
I am also looking at how to level the boat to start straightening. Should i just use the water line on the boat to level or is there a better way?

Thanks for the responses!

The best way to gain/retain level and square is to support the boat from the stringers as long as she's inverted anyway. This is also assuming your floor surface is flat and level.

Well... I would recommend if you don't have it already is to purchase Don Danenberg's How to restore you wooden runabout and follow that. You can ask as you go.

There is some good information in those books but don't ask Don about anything, he has a dislike for "newbies".

Don Danenbergs book

Post by Stunoodle » Tue Feb 01, 2011 12:17 pm

I have THE COMPLETE WOODEN RUNABOUT RESTORATION GUIDE. BY DON DANENBERG. It is a great book, really a wealth of knowledge. My hat goes off to him, newbie hater or not.
Does anyone have advice on whether I should automatically remove the first topside plank next to the chine? Every bottoom rebuild I see they have removed this, is it crazy to think I might not have to? I do have to bring both chines back in to the auxiliary frame, but it seems like I can do this without removing that topside plank.
