1963 Sea Skiff color

Post by wolfe » Wed Sep 16, 2015 9:27 am

Hi, does any one have a guess what the closest blue/gray hull color equivalent in a modern marine hull side paint could be? I am tryin to match up the original hull color. The previous owner sanded everything down th bare wood and I have nothing to go on. The boat is a 1963 ,19' Sea Skiff.

Check with Sandusky Paint Co (Sandusky, OH). They have reproduced almost all the CC colors. I'm thinking the color was Midnight Blue. It could also be Charcoal Blue. The hull card for your boat should tell.

Well that's the problem, the hull card does not give a hull color all I have to go on is a 1964 brochure that is not very clear. Sandusky paint does not know what went on the boat, is it a midnight blue OR charcoal blue. The mariners museum does not really know either.

If the original color is unknown , well, it's unknown. I'd pick one of the original colors I liked the best and go with it.

When no color is specified on the hull color the presumption is that the "standard " color was used. I'm pretty sure that charcoal blue was standard but check out a period brochure for guidance. I may be mistaken but I believe the midnight blue may have been used for the shear color when a white hull side was specified.

Hopefully a real Sea Skiff research analyst will come forward and confirm. These are recollections from memory of what I saw around the marina inventory.

Hi, My dad owned a 1963 31' CC Sea Skiff for about 30 years and he knew that boat from the day it was new since the original owner and second and only other owner were good friends of his. Unfortunately, we had to let the boat go about two years ago, but the boat was painted charcoal blue from the factory and we, nor did the other owners ever change the original hull color, so I know it was original. And I breathed in enough charcoal blue sanding dust over the years that I am very familiar with that color.

When dad bought the boat around 1980, CC still had their parts department in Algonac and dad contacted them about buying the hull paint from them. Well, I don't exactly recall if CC told us to go there or maybe they sent the first order of paint in their cans, but the paint was made by the Repcolite Paints Company of Holland, MI. The address I have from our files is 473 W. 17th Street Holland, MI 49423 Phone 616-396-1275. We eventually bought many gallons of their color number 104 Glo Enamel Chris Craft Charcoal Blue directly from them and it was a perfect match every time. (That color name/number is right from an old invoice from them by the way)

The claimed that they made a lot of the original paint for CC which made sense since they are in Holland. So if you're looking for the original charcoal blue, you probably would never find closer than that.

Hope this helps,
Ron Michael

Sounds like the paint info we've discussed worked out for you. Are you getting the paint from Repcolite? I'm just curious if they were still around.
