How to lift my Sea Skiff

Post by NOT Firewood » Mon Sep 12, 2016 6:43 pm

Well it is time, time to scrape the hull of my old girl. So I am going to attempt to set up my skiff in my garage. A 23' boat in a 24' garage, well with some small modifications. I know it will have a lot of questions over the next 4-5 months but I will start with this one.

What is the best way to lift her off the trailer keeping in mind that my ceiling height is 8' high. I know you guys are already figuring out she will not fit height wise. She will, as I have to remove the windshield for repairs. So back to my question, Do I trust the lifting rings? Do it jack from underneath? Use a strap system? Please give me your opinion.

Only trust the lifting rings for lifting. Lift slightly off trailer and listen for noises(cracking wood) before removing trailer. Block it up before you get under it.

This takes time but does not need lifting equipment and can be done by one person. Drop the bow, by cranking the handle on the trailer jack, which will raise the stern, place cinder blocks and 2x4's under the stern. Crank the handle on the trailer jack to raise the bow, which will lift the stern off the trailer. place blocks under keel, use a mechanics floor jack with wood to reposition blocks under keel. (little at a time).

I will assume you have already removed the engine? Makes the lift easier and somewhat safer as depending on what engine is in the boat, it could weigh around 1000 pounds.

Screw type boat stands are what I used to help support the boat while the trailer was eased out of the way. If you have at least 4 of them, you can reposition them one at a time when you have to sand or paint where the stand is in the way. They come up on Craigslist periodically for less than you would buy them new.

This is the idea I used on my Lyman 25 foot hardtop.

Well I think the question do I trust the lifting ring was answered as a no, I don't like if I hear cracking. kind of scares me. I think I will use a combination of jack and a lifting rig with straps. Now the next question anybody have comments about using a cradle on wheels?

I agree with the cradle on wheels, I recommend you use spreaders if you lift with straps as I have seen, especially lapstrake boats, that were squeezed and crushed.

Im with Jim Staib on this one. Sea Skiffs should only be lifted by the rings. I have repaired many of them after people used jacks and/or bad trailer bunk placement.
