Need help with final touch on Capri Interior

Post by Pete DeVito » Fri Jan 17, 2014 9:19 pm

Well I am down to the final touch on the Capri interior and need some help.
I have the following questions if anyone out there has original seats on their 57/58 Capri. The interior I have is the Tango Red and White Tolex.

Questions
(top photo)
Front seat and rear seat backs both have stitching in the middle lower front side. The following items I need verification.
• Spacing of stitching distance between horizontal stitched lines
• Stitch count (stictches per inch) in that horizontal stitched line
• Number of rows of stitching

(bottom photo)
• Lower front seat back is it red or white? This is the area where the seat bottom touches the seat back front side.

• What areas does the Silver Mylar welting go?

• Seat bottom side bands what color Red or White?

Thanks for any help

Well I have verbal confirmation that there were 6 rows of stitching in the middles of the seats and from photos it looks like the seat bands were White.

This has helped with two of the questions.

Can anyone help fill in the balance of the blanks for me. It seems that there are two boats we know of out there with original interior but can't get them to respond.

I have upholstered a couple and have some detailed copys of what looks to be original. I did this boat with wood worker in north ca. I have every reason to belive it is correct .
So the answer to is the bottom red or white , RED is correct as cushions are most red and will blend in when cushion is in place.

This is a big help..
Would you happen to have the details on the stitching in the middle of the set backs along with where the silver welting goes?
Thanks again for all your help

Pete, not sure what the question is , the welting should go around the inserts and the perimeter of back . If this helps great , if not what you need try me again or call anytime 916-708-6241 Stan

Stan,
I want to thank you for all your help. Yes my question was that I was wondering what areas the silver welting went on the seats. I had my old skins for the pattern but the welting was incorrect. I had the museum photos but hard to tell.
Thanks again!

Any good ideas on how to stretch the material for the crash pad in the cruved corners. I did this on my 48 but am struggling on my Capri to get them all even with no pleats.

You have to make relief cuts on the backside and pull it tight as you go. Corners can be tricky and it takes a little practice.

I have videos, They cost 50.00 and show all steps to make and install crash pad.
I WILL BE DOING A SEMINAR THIS MONTH AT Currtis's shop in GRASS VALLEY on UPHOLSTERY .along with wood restorers.

I WILL TRY TO GUIDE YOU THROUGH IT . 1ST. how wide is your vinyl ? I cut mine at 5" wide to give plent of finger room to work with, I never make relief cuts as you may have to do adjustments .
START IN MIDDLE OF BOW , work towards corners. as you get 10" away from stop. Go to corners pull the vinyl up and towards the center of boat. the warmer the vinyl the easier it is to pull . when at half way through corner start pulling towards the aft. this pulls the wrinkles out of corners,
How is your crash pad made? I sew welt to the vinyl before I install . If yours is two parts, start with welting use 1/4" staples.. use a small cut of pad foam to space welt from top edge , used as depth guide. once welt is installed start adding tack strip using 3/8" stainless steel staples. Use 1/4" stainless steel staples to secure to deck. less damage to deck wood.

Oh , some problems arise when the vinyl is cut in the wrong direction from the roll.
The vinyl has more stretch across the roll than up the roll. CUT THE CRASH PAD UP THE ROLL OR RAILROADED. All the vinyl for crash pad is cut in the same direction up the roll. this allows for more stretch to get around the corners. You may have trouble if too cold. use hair dryer to warm vinyl on back side. , We use steam in some cases. but, hot water on a rag let sit till soft then pull and staple.
Hope this helps. good luck.

my pad material and welting is all made in one. I have done exactly what you described so far. I think I need to get the material a little warmer and stretch through the corners. I am awaiting on a second set of hands also. thanks again for the advise.

Latest update on Knotty Blonde
Upholstery is going in and looking great! Tested all systems today and all looked good except for a little knocking at shaft coupling when fully engaged in gear.
