Okay small block guys, what is a 350-15 engine ???

Keeping your powerboat under power is a lot easier with good advice. Post your power systems questions here.

Okay small block guys, what is a 350-15 engine ???

Post by Paul P » Mon Mar 17, 2014 12:06 pm

Hi guys,

My friend, Mark, just acquired a nice 23 Lancer that has been sitting up for 5 to 6 years and it has a motor that is causing some speculation. The hull card (attached) calls it a 350-15 when it appears other hull cards of the era would call out the 350Q that we think was the stock standard motor for this boat.

There has been some speculation that there may have been some special order power options. The original exhaust logs are gone so we can not use the tags to help with the information. The logs are replaced with what I call a vertical center discharge design with a tub curve back and down toward the transom, giving evidence those were replaced by the previous owner (now deceased).

The propeller spec is a stock 15x16 RH but naturally if you have a motor rated for 5000 rpm that prop would be pushing the boat from around 35 mph to 43 mph through the 1.5:1 gear reduction. So we continue to speculate until such time we are able to actually start the motor, get more details off the heads and intake manifolds, still knowing those could have been swapped sometime during the course of previous ownership.

It may have been the person filling out the card just jotted down the generic "350" and did not care about whether it was a Q, K, or F, or whatever, and then the "15" could be the gear ratio. 8)

Regards,

Paul

350Q is the only engine option listed in the Essential Guide. It notes that the "Rally Package was standard on hulls ORB-23-2001-ORB-23-2055". Is it a flywheel forward with the Q intake manifold? The intake is the key component of the Q series that differentiates it from the rest of the engine lines.

The Essential guide can not get all the details right because there were boats being built in numerous locations w the same badge. Just found out today at least one Chattanooga 23 Lancer came w a 350G

Now we think this other Chattanooga 23 has a G motor too. Stay tuned.
One thing for sure, it is not a Q

Can the museum tell you anything about the engine based on the engine number from the hull card?
