Lancer 270 Transom removal How?

Post by artracing » Sat Sep 19, 2009 12:17 pm

Can someone tell me what needs to be done to remove the transom. Penta 270 V8 23" Lancer 1976

Looks like 6 bolts for the plate to the motor and 4 bolts for exhaust manifold.
Steering rod or cable.
6 big Transom bolts.

What is the rest of the procedure.?

Does the engine need to be supported?

What do you want to do? Replace the inner transom that is rotten? In that case you are ten times better off if you lift the engine out of the boat. If you dont take this advice like you should then yes you need to support the engine.

Hoisting the engine is in the worst case of cases NEVER more work than the extra time and trouble you will spend on transom work with a big engine in your face all the time.

Hoisting the engine is not an option. Some of us are limited in tools and a tree.
Here is what I have done and hopefully some one can use this in the future.

Here we go. For the record.

I'll use my own terminalogy naming the parts. Correct me if you like.
Yes, you can take the transom shield off without removing the V8 engine.
Outdrive off
Steering arm and yoke off
Remove bolts from both exhaust manifolds.
Remove 4 bolts from transom shield exhaust manifold
Back off exhaust manifold from transom then you can get to the two lower transom mounting bolts.
Place a short 1 ton jack under the engine bell housing and put a little pressure on it with the jack.
Remove 6 bolts from ring mount that holds the transom to the engine bell housing.
Install 3 of those bolts into 3 thread holes on the ring and jack the ring off.
Pull the transom.

OK, now in my case. Badly corroded mounting ring is stuck and the thread holes are stripped.
Take a large tappered punch. Tip of punch should be 5/16. Place the punch
in the mounting holes and retracting holes and hit with hammer until the holes in the ring split. Do this on all 9 holes.
To aid in pulling the ring. Take a come-a-long to the lower outdrive latching bar and the back of your car. Put enough tension on the cable where a tight rope walker could walk across it.

You could also try a few prayers to you higher power that one of the holes your drivng the punch into cracks the ring and yippy its off.
I think I went through 5 holes before it let lose.

I was replacing the transom with a better one so I didn't care what happened with the one on the boat.

I hope this helps someone in the future.
