Fuel Filter/Cannister?

Post by jbyers » Wed May 20, 2015 2:02 pm

I seem to be missing something from my newly purchased 1958 CC Cavalier..... (see pictures). I believe this is the fuel pump, so the missing parts are the cannister/filter?

Does anyone know where I could find these?

Thanks,

Looks to be all there. K engine? If so, there would have been no filter.

The wire hanging below the pump on the right is the manual primer. The glass bowl on the left is your "crude" filter, for catching sediment in the fuel. Just check to make sure the diaphram in your pump is in good shape. If not, replace. I had the whole pump rebuilt with new parts.

I also added a fuel filter just after the gas tank under my rear deck.

Thanks Kindly Chad. Once I enlarged the picture, I didn't see any gasket surface where a cannister could have gone, so I figured I was wrong. I'm glad to hear it's all there.

There is a fine bronze screen sitting on top of the glass bowl with a o ring type gasket, From the condition of that bowl, I would say they need replacing. Jim Staib at finewoodboats.com probably has those screens. NAPA has the gaskets. There are different sizes

Do yourself a favor and rebuild the fuel pump, add an external filter, and make sure the fuel tank isn't going to contribute even more problems from rust, debris, sludge, leaks etc. Don't over-tighten the nut on the bottom of the fuel pump sediment bowl. Instead of fixing or preventing a leak you'll create one by distorting the mating surface.

Congrats on the 'new' boat. Get the mechanical things in order, and you'll enjoy her so much more.

If you do add a filter it is recommended to ground the fuel tank. Many of these boats used the copper fuel line to ground the tank to the block. By installing an inline filter it is possible to disrupt this ground and cause disastrous results. Most good spin on blocks will still suffice as a grounding conductor, but it is better to be safe than sorry.

Great answers...... thanks all. I'm such a novice. I've done vintage cars before but never a boat. I'll get up to speed at some poing.
