The fuel tank in my 1940 Runabout rusted out allowing 2-3 gallons of gasoline to drip into the bilge. The boat was in storage and the fuel accumulated over a 1-2 month period of time. I have removed the fuel tank (the source) and mopped up all of the gas I could get to. I then scrubbed the bilge with a 50/50 mix of water and vinegar before splashing a generous amount of pure vinegar throughout the area and washing it out with a hose. Prior to the spill the inside of the hull was covered with 5200 which the gas began to lift up. In a couple of small areas the gas also found its way through the joints in the blanks before dripping on the floor. Despite my efforts a strong smell of gas still exists.
Has anyone else who has experienced this situation had a more successful method of cleaning the gas up to avoid a potential bigger problem in the future?
