Unknown Contraption? Original v. Add-On

Post by burtonb » Wed Mar 28, 2012 11:41 pm

I found this unusual mahogany device in my 1966 36' CC Crusader. Any idea what it's used for?

Would appreciate your thoughts.

Hmmm..... I wonder if it's a fender board, tie a couple of fenders to it to spread them out along the hull a little bit.

I agree. A fender board. I had one for my cruiser.

Thanks to all! Now that I have a name for it, I can find how to make another or use it. Here's a link in case somebody else might be interested:

That's interesting! The fender boards we see in the Erie canal locks are usually a junky 2x4, not mahogany. They are used to protect the fenders from abrasion and disgusting slime as you slide up and down along the lock walls and as such a generally cheap and disposable.

The one pictured must have been used as more of a spacer, but i am not sure why the metal reinforcing would be needed. How long is it?

I would agree with fender board. I have set of 4 for my cruiser. I only use them when she is in the sling to keep the straps off the rub rails. Reduces the amount of crud transferred from the straps to the hull paint too.
