Looking for restoration shops in WI area

Post by chris.nackers » Thu Oct 15, 2020 9:52 am

Hi all,

Looking for recommendations on any shops that in/around the WI area. I need some topside work done on the boat, and am not sure if I want to tackle it myself or not yet, so wanted to talk to a couple shops.

I have talked with Delevan Boat Shed, but i know there are others out there.

Thanks!

Just found that one. First number went to fax, left a voicemail on the 2nd number. Hopefully will hear from him.

Looks like he does good work based on the website, and being in Northern WI, i'm hoping the prices are fair, versus some of the southern shops that have too many Chicago people willing to pay ANYTHING. I don't mind paying fair/reasonable rates, just don't need them inflated for the sake of it. Anyways..

Just curious, what would be a fair hourly wage to pay for antique boat restoration work?

Ya? I agree. You get what you pay for. I recall doing a story on this topic. https://www.woodyboater.com/blog/2019/0 ... ood-thing/

Oh i have no idea. Hence why i'm trying to find a couple places to talk to and see what they think on the work. I also just want a couple opinions on what needs to be done on the boat. I'm still learning.

Have you had any luck with anyone looking over the boat for what it should need?

Oh yeah, It's a learning curve that's for sure and takes a whole lot of time if your not in the business of restoring boats like me.
I've been in the hobby since 1999 with one restoration done and one in progress. My brother was here for the first restoration although unfortunately I'm now doing the second one on my own due to his passing.
Asking questions here is a great avenue for information, you'll see me doing the same. I would also suggest joining a local ACBS chapter so you can contact members in your immediate area to help with assessing your boat. I also always recommend Don's how to restore your wooden runabout book to everyone who is willing to dive into a project. It's a must have as far as I'm concerned along with a lot of questions and phone calls.
It's a great hobby which does take quite a commitment to get to the finish line if your doing the work yourself. I have enjoyed the entire process and will probably stay with it till the end.. And I'm still learning...

Talked with a few people. Some places were 4+ hours away so haven't taken the boat there for anything yet.

Thus far, i'm intending to tackle everything myself. Planning to strip the boat and refinish and repair what i need to. Pulled the engine this past week to work on rebuilding that as well. I've got 6 months, so hopefully can get it all done :)
