Fender cleat location

Some time ago there was a discussion about how many fender cleats came on the Chris Crafts. My 1955 17' Sportsman's build sheet says mine had 6. When I got the boat, there were only 4 and the boat had undergone a restoration (an incorrect one) a number of years ago. So where, if you had 4, or 6, would they be positioned? I dug through a bunch of old Yachting, Rudder, Motorboating ads and surprisingly, Chris Craft didn't advertise pictures of their boats with hardware on them other than step pads and lifting eyes.

Get some fenders and test them. Put the cleats where they will work.

Jim, That's what I did...but I was curious if there was any "designated" location...See you at Tavares!

Most of the boats that I have done has 6. One seems to be always in front of the windshield about a foot forward of the windshield bracket, you should be able to reach it from the drivers seat. The other is midship and the last one is a bit tricky. You should not have it so far back so the bumper can roll off the back side and get stuck behind the transom. It also should not be anywhere were someone getting into the boat (at the back seat) can trip on it getting in. This is easy on a runabout but the placement is more difficult on a utility. This is a picture of a 17' 1957 and it looks like they are all in a good place to me, this is what I would do.

I believe yours has a toe rail up front so the forward on would go aft a bit closer to the windshield bracket maybe about 4-5 inches and just inside the toe rail about an inch.

Or you could put it about an inch behind the toe rail. This way the line would not go over the toe rail and mare up the varnish.
