Collectors Foundation Kit Boat Auction

Post by Bill Basler » Mon Jun 09, 2008 2:02 pm

In your Winter 2008 Brass Bell and in the Spring 2008 Brass Bell you may recall a short "Beacon" story about a very special auction going on right now on eBay.

This boat is a going to be a great buy for some lucky bidder. I would love to see this boat bought by someone within this Club, but the important thing is that it reaches the value it deserves.

Current bid is $5,600.00 on a boat that is valued at $12,000.00! This is a great looking James Craft Kit Boat, patterned after the original 14-foot Chris-Craft Zephyr Kit Boat. The boat kit was generously donated by Club member Jim Shotwell of James Craft to the Collectors Foundation, a nonprofit organization, which works to encourage youth participation in the collector boat and car hobbies.

To date, the Collectors Foundation has awarded over $1 million in scholarships and grants for youth-focused collector car and boat programs. Recipients include the Landing School of Boat Building and Design in Kennebunkport, Maine; the Northwest School of Wooden Boat Building in Port Hadlock, Washington; and the Minnesota Lakes Maritime Museum in Alexandria, Minnesota, among others.

The proceeds from the sale of the kit boat will assist the Collectors Foundation in continuing to support wooden boat design, building, and appreciation.

Bidding on this boat accomplishes several things quite well. First, it will put you on the water immediately, in a great looking, turn-key boat, with real vintage Chris-Craft pedigree. Second, it will help the Collectors Foundation meet their financial goals, as they budget to help others within the marine niché. And third, organizations within our niché will benefit from the generosity of the Collectors Foundation donations, allowing the hobby to foster young talent, and ultimately growing the hobby and profession surrounding antique and classic boat building.

Now's the time. Bidding ends June 12, 2008 at 8:43 Pacific Daylight Time. So place your bids now!

It looks like the boat was purchased today for $6,501.00. Someone ended up with a great boat for very little cash outlay. And the Collectors Foundation wins by adding $6,501.00 to their bottom line—which they then reinvest into our hobby.

A win-win for all.

The deal of the the week..Warren a fellow Woody Boater was the lucky winner. He was shocked. We were just trying to bid the darn thing up. I spoke with Jim Shotwell at the St Michael's boat show, he said one just like it that he had done last year sold for 15K.. We shook our heads. Was everyone asleep at the mouse on this one.
