Retractable mooring cover

If it doesn't pertain to metal, wood, wire or fabric—but it is about vintage Chris-Crafts, ask your question or give your advice here.

Retractable mooring cover

Post by Kerry Price » Sat Oct 24, 2015 11:01 pm

I am looking into keeping my boat on a lift in a covered slip here in Texas and have been looking at a couple of different options to keep the boat protected from the elements like sun, dust, wind, rain, bugs and whatever else that may mess with the boat interior and finish.
At first I was thing to just have a mooring cover made but the more I thought about it I wanted to see if there was something else out there that would be easier to use and do a better job to keep the boat secure.
I found two different concepts that I have not heard previously discussed being used for wood boats like ours and I'm just wondering if anyone has used either of these products.
The first one is “The Touchless Cover” http://www.touchlesscover.com/boat-covers.php. I have seen a few of these around and think they offer reasonably good protection.
I also stumbled onto “The Ultimate Boat Cover” http://worldsbestboatcover.com/MarineCo ... index.html that really looks interesting. Unlike the Touchless system that requires an electric motor to retract the curtain, the Ultimate Boat Cover is completely manual. It hangs onto rails and pulls around the boat like a shower curtain and zips up either at the back or in front. It is designed to fit tight to the chine so that nothing can fly or climb up into the boat.
Both of these products go on and come off in seconds and appear to be completely hassle free.
Check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BCICEI4MPXY to see what I’m talking about. I’m wondering if anyone has had any experience using either system and what you all think.

Hi Kerry!

There is a guy at Dora every year displaying the touchless system. Maybe you should show up this year just to check it out, even if you don't bring a boat. :D

IMHO the other one may restrict air flow more than I would like, and the guy seems to struggle a little with the zipper on a brand new cover at what looks like an indoor show environment. What's it going to be like after a few years outdoors? :?

There are a few here on the lake I'm on. I looked into becoming a dealer for them in this area when they first came out. I think the product is excellent. The one thing I really like about it is. It does not touch the boat.

The only thing I wonder about the other one is it seems to be almost form fitting to the boat. If so will they make it with a felt lining for wood boats.
