What is this???

If it doesn't pertain to metal, wood, wire or fabric—but it is about vintage Chris-Crafts, ask your question or give your advice here.

Jim,

The hole in mine is at about the 2 oclock position. Should I be worried about this? It certainly puts the hole a couple of inches closer to the water line. Should I plug it and drill a hole at top dead center?

I think it would be fine. I find that chris craft knew what they were doing when they made these boats.

I have never owned a boat with a self bailer so I do not know what I would decide if I ever have one. :?

I have a friend who found his 1932 triple floating at the gunwale one morning and of course it was attributed to the "Self Bailer". One of my concerns would be that even properly maintained a simple mud wasp nest can plug the anti-siphon hole and create real trouble.

Something to remember:

While we're on the subject of bailers and bailing, my 1948 cruiser doesn't have a self bailer, but it does have a cool bronze hand pump with a nice wooden handle. As Jim G mentioned, CC really knew what they were doing and put a lot of good common sense thought into the building of our boats. My hand pump bilge pump is located directly in front of the head, so when she's going down and you need to pump like mad and your crapping your pants you can do both at the same time. Brilliant!

Now that was a designer/engineer that was really thinking.

As long as you stay on plane, a self bailer will never sink a boat. If you leave it tied at the dock or drive around at idle it might be a risk, but CC didn't build boats to sit still.
