Lovett Bilge pump

Post by RRGadow » Sun Jan 04, 2015 9:55 am

I was on vacation this past week....and came across a NOS Lovett USA built pump still in the box, so I couldn't let this one go! Are they as good as people say? Is anyone interested in it?

If its 6 volt, yes. If 12 volt there are other ones out there that are just as good.

Ryan,

That is the gold standard pump imho.

I horde them.....

If it is 12 Volt you should keep it for your boat as backup....

The last time I got one on Ebay it was the shower stall pump version...which is the bilge pump in a different housing...but still I wanted the pump part...

I have several Lovett post on this site.....short version is that cheapo pumps and rising cost of domestic manufact. killed them off.....they went to off shoring stuff and I actually had a later model that performed poorly because of that.
they also went to alum wire instead of copper....check the date on the pump...printed on the inside of the housing...and see if you have copper wires.

We all need to be on the lookout for NOS lovetts I think......I will buy that one if you contact me....and it meets specs.

I just picked up two 6V Lovett bilge pumps earlier this week. I am willing to part with one of them if anyone is interested.

This one is a 12volt 900....which would end up 6volt 450.

Trouble is if you find a NOS Lovett, the rubberized belt is most likely rotted, cracked, or stretched. Lovett also sold a belt kit, but if you found one, same problem. The Lovett boys still live in Somers Point, NJ. Years ago we restored a U-22 once owned by the family.

Absolutely true about the NOS pumps and their drive belts. But I have found that those belts are really just large O rings .....can be found at good hardware stores....dead ringers for the original but I understand the concern of using cobbled together stuff on such a vital component....just sayin....there are options....

The right size vacuum cleaner belt might also work.

yes, and they are really the only part of those great pumps that is likely to wear out...and there are two of them for safety sake.

Really a shame these pumps are no longer available...you would think that industry would figure out that some folks are willing to pay for premium bilge pumps....but they must have done the math and research and found otherwise.....I have surely had Rule's last a long time too....but not those requiring float switches or internal switches....more like the manual ones last a good while. There is no Mercedes of bilge pumps for the smaller than a ship boater that I know of?

Hence I keep hording lovetts

I put a brand new Atwood Sahara in FLASH during the restoration, and it died within the first two weeks. I replaced it at the Bluegrass Rendezvous show and the new one was shot by the time I got back to Ohio. Any reason I would burn up two pumps within two weeks? I just don't get it. Any recommendations for a good pump for my little Ski Boat? I think I used a 750gph.

Atwoods are junk...and should be outlawed. One almost sunk my boat a few years back.

without singling out any on manufacturer I would rank Atwood, Johnson Pump and Rule toys in comparison to a Lovett.
As I said above.....there seem to be no high end high cost alternatives....not for non ships anyway.

I have had bad luck with all but Lovett and the last edition of those was, as said, significantly off from the original quality

My Lovett pumps at least 4 to 6 times a day.....have a counter......that concerns me not a bit....done that for 20 years...wooden boat in salt water....want some water in there. BUT it has to work.

Now that DC Lovett is backed up by a big AC 110 Volt shore powered Rule....one of those that comes on for a few seconds every three minutes and if it senses water it expels it....or so it goes. this pump is set about an inch above the Lovett.

I guess those other TOY pumps are not for "maintaining"...but for "occasional" use while owner is aboard...and awake.

So you can easily see that pump reliability is a big issue for me....hence the pile of " lovetts I covets ".
