A curious Craigslist posting......

If it doesn't pertain to metal, wood, wire or fabric—but it is about vintage Chris-Crafts, ask your question or give your advice here.

A curious Craigslist posting......

Post by Peter M Jardine » Thu Feb 27, 2014 9:58 pm

For those who want the rarest of the rare, and have very deep pockets.

The biggest boat that Chris Smith built at the time. I believe Alan Jackson owned one?? .... for those absolutely masochistic brightwork aficionados.

I'm sure someone here knows this boat and its current owners.

Its up at Don Price's St. Lawrence Restoration in Clayton. Don Ploetner owned it last as far as I know.

I saw it on antiqueboatamerica today too.

It was in Michigan a while back. I'm too old for a project like that :o

A huge project for someone with a lot of passion, not to mention money. The asking price is reasonable but the actual purchase price itself will be little more than a rounding error on the final tally once this is done. A very special boat for a very special and dedicated hobbyist.

I considered this boat briefly a number of years ago, but quickly realized that I lacked the resources to take it on. I can't help but imagine what a fantastic cocktail cruiser/entertainment boat this would be for someone on a large lake - would be nice for a resort to own, perhaps.

it says in conrad that it came with either a70's or A120's. Are there two of either of those around? Wouldnt that make a great restoration?

I think this one came with A70's Don, and they can be bought but are hard to find. I would think fully rebuilt A70's are $50k a pop, but that is just a guess. I suppose if one is spending the money to do the rest of the baot, what's $100k for engines? Based on my experience, rebuilding the two Scripps 208's that are in there would cost around $30k or so each or more, depending on whether they need pistons and sleeving or not. The Scripps would be nice as well - roughly comaparable power to the A70's and less weight - as if that matters on something this size! Either way, the power would still be a small part of the overall project cost.

A-70s and A-120s are incredibly rare. I know of zero of either on the market that are restorable. The A-70s had a few inherent problems which is why Chris-Craft completely redesigned it only two years after its introduction. They only share a few interchangeable parts. I sold the last A-120 on the market for a friend six months ago. John Allen, Mike Green, and I scraped the bottom of the barrel for A-70 stuff a few years ago for the two 28's he did, and we had two A-70s to begin with! Sometimes the engines are worth more than the boats.

Right, Paul, with a project like this, the engine costs wouldnt be that significant. Does anyone know if any of the other 4 are around and restored/preserved? Would make a great article. It would have taken a lot of guts to buy one of these in 1930,i think.

Interesting, Brian, about the engines.

Don, there is one left that I know of and it is located in Montreal, PQ Canada. It is used and shown very regularly by some dedicated and apparently enthusiastic hobbyists from the area. It can be seen at local shows, and it apparently gets around. I have seen pictures and it's a wonderful boat. The boat is named Allez is one wishes to search it. This boat was also the subject of an article in Classic Boating in the 1990's by Gordon Millar. He lamented the small fuel tanks in them, which limited their range. I can only imagine the fuel consumption of these. I'd say diesels would be the right choice, if one was to put in modern power.

At the time of the article, Allez was located in Florida I recall.

I would think that boat with vintage power etc would be conservatively about a $600k resto....and Alan Jackson has a 38 not the big girl...it's still stUnning

maybe closer to a mil. I am guessing that the top flight restoration of Hapike, for example, the 30 gar wood commuter, like 1940 or so, which was earlier the acbs boat of the year, was around $500 K. Ditto for redos of riva aquaramas, etc. This is something beyond the reach of most of us, alas. Nevertheless it would be a wonderful piece to have around. Clearly a flagship for the pre war cc's.

Prior to the war they also built a 48 footer, 1939-41 (17 hulls) and a 55 footer 39-41, too (9 hulls). of course after the war they built many larger boats, culminating in the largest, the 66' connie, 1960-61, 5 made. i think one of those is around here in seattle.

There is a 57 foot Connie for sale on the West Coast.....looks like a nice boat, and only 99k. My favourite Connie, and a 57 was the last wooden boat to leave a CC plant in 1972. I believe they made 125 of this model.

Peter.
That Connie is in Seattle and owned by one of the frequent providers to this list. She is on Craigslist Seattle, and embarrassing to say...the description says that in her history she was a repo. I think she may have been owned by a partner of mine, but with the name "Tahoe" on Lake Union.

We cruiser folk know that it isn't a matter of whether there is rot, it's only a question of how much

I just might be a little two old and too poor to own one, but I still want it.

To All,

Yes the largest wood C.C. ever built is here in Seattle, she is a 66' 3" Connie named Teco II and is undercover on Westlake Ave and is for sale. The second largest is my boat which 2 were built and my sistership is at the bottom of Lake Michigan as a violent storm ripped the bow off in 2003. Gross Tonnage, at 46, she was the largest mahogany C.C. built, powered by twin Cat D-343T's at 950 HP. Hull placard shows max hp at 1004. Don't know how they came up with that #!

My boat came out of the factory in Oct 1963 named "Dutch Treat" and was custom made for the owner of NC Machinery, Volney Richmond, she was the only 65' to get Cat engines, they were custom made C-12's by Volney and shipped to the factory where the boat was built around the engines. Also she was the only boat to get double width 10" stringers because they feared the torque would rip the boat apart. They were right. the engine mounts came apart in 1983 and had to be replaced with double spring versions. I am friends with the mechanic at Jensen Boat that installed them, along with a 10" keel extension to stiffen her up for 20 knot speeds. In 1974 the flybridge was installed, yes she was a ragtop before, and then was sold to Hank Issacson in 1978, changed the name to "High Seas" where she was the biggest boat at Seattle Yacht Club for many years. History shows that she has been to Alaska 17 times between the years 1965 and 1997. She has attended many CCR's and in the 7 years we have owned her we have reseamed the decks, replaced the transom and the bow. We purchased her from a mortgage repo company in Dec 2006 where she had lived outside for 3 years with no repairs or coverings. Craigslist ad tells most of the work done, if you want a tour, the boat is in a boathouse in Everett to hide from previous owner that it was repossessed from. Also look at the ChrisCraftRendezvous.com website for hundreds of pics of our Northwest cruisers and join us for the 25th annual CCR in July.

Tim, Thanks for the info on "High Seas" and especially Mr. Issacson...He was one of Seattle's best.
BTW, Do you know what ever happened to the "Tahoe"?
