Mark;

We have found boxes on some of the original boats and been able to prove it came original. My only thought is that they were easy to remove and never got put back and that is why they are rare to find. The box you have is not as tall as the originals we have found. You should be able to find stamps on them, like "17D" or "19D".

Mark,
We have one in 71826. I have not tried to prove that the box itself is original but my research has shown that most of the boat is original (including bottom). I don't have any good pictures of the box and the boat is in storage about 70 miles away. I may have to go "visit" it in the next month and if so I will measure it and look for ID marks like Don referenced. No help now, but maybe in the near future! The attached photo does show the corner of the box holding some dark green fenders - for what it's worth.

the 37 to 39 deluxes had a large tray in the back, in front of the gas tank. chad, there was a dispute at tahoe this year as to the dimensions of the tool and oil can box. can you give me your dimensions, and do you believe yours is original? thanks.

Don, the boat pictured was a boat in Wisconsin that recently went up for sale. I drove up from Chicago to take a look at it's originality. The owner said the boat has been in the family since 1941. Not in the water since the 60's. I took many pictures from all angles, but not get any dimensions. I did not buy the boat. I'm sure he would be happy to get you any dimensions you need, he can be contacted at:

Just ask for Joe.

Guys;

I think the topic shifted from the storage box to the tool and batt box. There were two different tool boxes because there were two different oil cans use in the pre-war years. Batt boxes that I have seen have been one size. If someone needs the size and how to make just send me a PM

Good to know. I did not see a storage box in this boat. Although the original B was swapped with an ACE at some point. Perhaps the box was removed to accommodate the different/larger exhaust configuration.

Reviving this 11-Year Old Thread ...

Gents,

I’m looking for info on the battery and tool storage boxes on the pre-war Runabouts and I found this thread that I’m hoping I can revive for some help. I have neither a battery box nor a storage box in my 1936 19’ Runabout, but I’m also not sure if either of them were originally installed on my boat (hull #48099). The original Chrysler engine was replaced with an 1952 ML from a U22, so I’m not sure if any original boxes were deleted at that point with the engine swap or if my boat never had them to begin with.

I’d love some help if anyone can provide some info on both confirming what my Runabout originally came with as well as a source for procuring original-spec boxes if anyone is making them. Thanks in advance for any help on this :)

I believe they had them then and i can get you the dimensions of my '38, which are the originals. However, i think if you search the archives you can find factory drawings for them? dont think anyone is making them commercially but they are simple in construction as the drawing shows, iirc.

there a 3 boxes if i am not mistaken: the large box across the back, a smaller box on the starboard side for the battery, and a somewhat larger divided box on the port side for the oil can and the other portion for tools.

come to think of it not sure about the larger box in the back as things were pretty cramped back there after the deluxe went barrelback in 1940. not much room.

Super, thanks Don. I'll poke around the archives but if you don't mind shooting over the dimensions as well that would be great. Thanks again for the expert help :)

North woody, the battery box measures about 8 7/8 x 12, and 5 and 1/2 deep. wood is 3/4. the bottom board covers the whole box. the sides run the full length and the narrow ends nest inside the sides. in the middle of the sides there should be about a 1 and 1/2 inch folded over strip of upholstery that runs across the top of the battery. there is about a 6 penny iron, headed nail that is pounded into the top of each side holding the strap down.

most likely the boat came with the willard battery. antique auto battery makes these with an optima battery hidden inside.
