What's Your Key Chain of Choice?

If it doesn't pertain to metal, wood, wire or fabric—but it is about vintage Chris-Crafts, ask your question or give your advice here.

What's Your Key Chain of Choice?

Post by North Woody » Mon Apr 01, 2019 10:49 am

Now that we're getting closer to Spring here in the Upper Midwest with temps approaching the 50's expected for this weekend, my thoughts are inching closer towards finally getting our soon-to-be-fully-restored 1936 19' Runabout on the water over Memorial Day. With the new 5200 bottom and paint work now complete by Steve Bunda, and having secured a beautifully-restored (non-functional) Pyrene fire extinguisher to install up front, I'm wondering what you guys are using for key chains. I've seen everything from modern plastic floating key fobs to monkey's fists to champagne corks ... I'm partial to an old-school monkey's fist with a brass shackle, but am looking for what you guys are using for any better ideas.

Thanks for sharing any thoughts and/or pictures on a lightweight topic for a slow Monday morning :)

Anything that floats. :)
Boats are to be made of wood, otherwise, God would have grown fiberglass trees.

A whistle. I always leave the key in the boat. On mine you can remove the key in any position. The whistle passes for a horn when getting inspected.

A monkey fist, it's soft and won't scratch the varnish. I also keep a key hidden by screwing it to an out-of-the-way location just in case I do lose the ignition key. Not that its all that difficult to hot wire the key switch.

Thanks all for the great suggestions. And thanks to the glorious internet, after a a 1-minute search online and $11.50 later, I’m the proud owner of a new keychain for Lake Girl :)

I just received from The Knotted Line, a floating key fob and a monkey's fist key ring.

A great read is "The Marlinspike Sailor" by Hervey Garrett Smith. Wonderfully illustrated for all types of ropework. Monkey's Fist, fenders, rope mats, canvas work etc. Great winter projects that accent any vessel.

I got my monkey fist key chain this week, can’t wait to get it where it belongs - in the boat on the water!

I did buy a back up key chain that I actually use for my car, but it just doesn’t feel right for the boat :)
