Re: drive shaft pulled out transmission seal-lost all oil
Here is a shot looking into the transmission. You can see the nut and locking tab. Now I see why Jim G says one tab as the others don't line up.

Re: drive shaft pulled out transmission seal-lost all oil
I am installing my transmission today. The gear on the engine sticks out approximately 3 inches and that goes into the transmission. You will need at least that much clearance.

Re: mmm 5200 bedding
Use 3M 5200 on those as well but use the mahogany color. It should be used to secure the planks to the frames, battens and butt blocks and on the plank to plank edges. If you don't have Don Danenberg's book then I would recommend getting the digital version and reading it first. Way too many details...

I am not familiar with your model but that king plank on the bow looks strange. Your blonde deck may be underneath that.

Not all models had a bootstripe.
Did you find any evidence of one on your planks ?

Re: Generator Re-build
I ordered a 3 foot piece of what is called Shrinkflex in the smallest available size. Not cheap. The package is pictured. I took a few inches and did a test with a piece of 12 gauge wire. It shrunk quite a bit and after heating still slid on the 12 gauge wire. My plan with the real wire is to put re...

Re: Generator Re-build
I called him this morning and he said that the wire goes directly to the windings and is not replacable. He suggested that I put a sealing compound on the bare spots.
I would much rather remove the spade lug on then and re-dress the wire with a new covering and then re crimp a lug on.

Two coats is recommended.
The second should immediately follow the first.
Be careful not to apply too aggressively so you don't move the stain.

Generator Re-build
I had my starter and generator rebuilt by a local shop who has a good reputation with the antique car community. I did tell him that this was a marine application. I got them both back last Friday and did not look at them very close as the owner was closing and in a hurry to leave. I did notice the ...

Re: Replacement gas tank
I just did this on my tank which has been empty and the fill tube removed for four years.
I first heated the outside fitting with a mapp gas torch and then used an impact driver and after a a lttile while it came loose.
No luck with a large adjustable wrench.
Godd luck.

One quetion on detail. You stated to wet sand then apply lettering and numbering.
If a decal is applied will the "white out" left after wet sanding be an issue ?

Re: Famo-Wood Questions
When you buy Famowood buy the solvent for it as well. That way you can loosen it up a little to load into an empty caulking tube and dispense that way to speed up the process. When you apply it have your puttty knife go in all directions so it sticks to the walls of your screw hole really well. It m...

Re: Famo-Wood Questions
Paul,
If it were me I would dig out all the filler and check all the fasteners to make sure they are tight and then re-fill with Famowood.
Yes it is durable and recommended below the waterline.

Well done finding out the root cause of the problem and fixing it correctly. There is something to be said for that.

Re: maintenance of a 10 year old 5200 bottom
The main question is are the planks still moving? If they are then you have a more serious issue. If not then you may get away with 5200 in the gaps and then address sealing the planks.

Transmission Seal Replacement
I have my paragon transimission off of my 1953 KL engine while it is being re-built so I thought it would be a good time replace the three transmission seals. Re: topside planks - dealing with open seams
Something is not adding up with this process. You are saying that varnish is applied to the wood, then with the varnish on you soak the wood and it swells, then you hurry up and apply more varnish to seal the wood so it never shrinks and swells again. Am I missing something here or is there somethin...

Re: use of old wood bungs vs new wood bungs
The point is that bungs with old wood will sand at the same rate as the old wood that they are in. Bungs with new wood will resist sanding more than the wood around it and tend to stay proud of the surrounding wood.

I have the same piece on my 1953 Rocket. It is narrow and runs along part of the keel, up the false stem and the bends on
to the deck about six inches. Plain brass. Nothing like the fancy cutwater on other models.

Don't forget the exhaust manifold. I had my restorer check mine along the engine and he found a crack the length of the manifold. Need to assess whether this can be welded or not.
