Re: Hull registration no
Looks like the old Coast Guard numbering scheme. Coast Guard small boat registration was turned over to each state sometime in the 1950s? My 1932 Hacker was 13P152. State registrations use abbreviations like MD for Maryland or AZ for Arizona, etc. Also, when there were only USCG numbers, no yearly s...

Re: 1938 gas tank restoration
If you have a tank fabricated, just be sure the outfit that does the work has a U.S. Coast Guard endorsement. Some outfits will fabricate to USCG specs, but unless they are certified to do so, steer clear. The new tank will have a code plate attached, and the work will be traceable regarding materia...

Re: KFL Spark Plug Gap and Marvel Mystery Oil
Regarding Marvel Mystery Oil: I put some very small spares in a sealed container with that product. They were stored for several months. When I went to remove the parts for use, I found the product had jelled. I have stopped using MMO for anything of importance. Now I use Kroil for long term storage...

Steve... The process with the spray cans is a "liquid dye penetrant test". I used this process to examine welds when I worked as a supervisor at a nuclear power plant. The process works well as long as the surface being examined is smooth. This was usually accomplished by die-grinding/sanding the ar...

Re: Shaft Packing '42 Special Runabout
That appears to be the keyway. The setscrew should engage a depression or "dimple" which is usually machined into the shaft using the coupling as a drill jig. The coupling fit on the shaft should be approx .0005" (half-thousanth of an inch) over the shaft diameter. A slight interference fit that wil...

Re: Shaft Packing '42 Special Runabout
A good opportunity to inspect the condition of the cutless bearing, as well. Also, be sure that the shaft is not fretted from over-adjusted packing. Usually, when packing wears, and loses its impregnated lube (usually wax), the tendency is to pull the gland up tight in an effort to squeeze a few mor...

Re: Crate 350 engine in a '56 Continental 18'
I have built several flywheel forward 350s using 283 Flagship hardware, and one thing that always has to be done is grind the oil pan to accommodate the increased rod journal throw. This may not become an issue with the Chris crank-case, but might deserve some consideration. Good advice on the use o...

Are you running synthetic? Synthetic oil may cause some slippage; that is why it is not recommended for use in a manual reverse gear. The zinc question addresses premature valve train wear, as newer oils no longer contain it. Most off the shelf oil sold today is strictly formulated for automobile us...

Re: Rudder post linkage arm - Broken
I may have one, or check with Jim Staib or Heinkel. I will root around in the stash tonight. Why did arm break? Inherent weakness in the design. Check the size of the square section on the rudder shaft. If fit is not almost size-for-size, then over-tightening would do it. What is the number in the c...

It is said that aluminum and ethanol-based fuels are not compatible over a long period of time, that leakage occurs in weldments due to stress corrosion. Do you use ethanol "blend" ? Does anyone have a source for nickel-plated brass upholstery tacks? I got my last batch from Southern Crown, but am unable to contact anyone there by phone. The DIY outfit only sells plated steel tacks; not something I want to use on exposed upholstery. These are best described as dome-head style. CQ

If they are straight pins, you can obtain .6875" oil-hardening drill rod, have a good machine shop precision-grind to .685", part/face to length, apply circlip grooves if required, then harden by oil-quench. There may be an outside chance you can obtain .685" blanks. MSC is a good starting point. Lo...

Re: maintenance of a 10 year old 5200 bottom
Did the shop put on a new inner planking? Sounds like no. If they left the original inner planking, and it was oil-soaked or otherwise damaged this may be causing some movement due to poor adhesion. However, you state the boat does not leak, so this might be a case of over-concern. Obviously you are...

You are right, Denny; very little bounce. But there is a lot of side-to-side working at speed, and when the pole works loose at 40 MPH it can go flying so fast that occupants won't see where it lands. I also have been aboard a friend's hopped-up Sea Maid and saw the burgee pole fly out and hit a pas...

Re: Carter AFB base plate gasket
The model number is on the base of the carb to the left of the left-hand idle adjustment needle valve. There may be some paint obscuring it. Look for four digits followed by a letter sequence. There are scads of carb models, but only a few different base gasket sizes. The model number usually crosse...
