Troy,
I truely enjoyed your article in the new The Brass Bell. And, I'm so happy that the 36-foot bull-Bose Connie found you and Sandi. She certainly lives up to her name; she is truely an American Beauty. Great story Troy & Sandi. See you soon!

I recall that some of my hardware was rough, with scaling and pitting. The guy ground, filled, polished and plated them all smooth and bright. All work appeared to be top shelf from my observation. The guy was accustom to doing work for top notch auto restorers, mostly grills, bumpers, door handles ...

Dan, like you, I didn't want to spend much on the gen set being I didn't use it very often when it did work well. Had I kept the cruiser I would have gotten a marine mechanic get it going again. From the point that Jim brought up, there may not be anything wrong with it, just the dumb operator. In t...

Re: New member 36' Seastrake in Sweden
Great to see progress is going well. The crane is huge. We used a fork lift with extended forks on mine. Electric fuel pumps can be dangerous in boats unless certain precautions are applied. Be sure to look into that. There are ways but I am not familiar with them. No snow on the ground over there, ...

Re: Generator
I had one but admit that I seldom used it. As you say John, they are noisy. And dangerous! We had CO detectors, there may be good ones out there but none that I would trust my life with. We used ours on a couple of long overnight cruises to run the toaster oven, grill, or coffee pot, but never left ...

Re: Generator
Most onboard generators have a remote 3-position switch: OFF - AUTO - MANUAL in an easily accessible location. In the manual position my gen set would start, if all was well with the engine. Onboard gen sets usually have an automatic transfer contactor built in. In the auto position it would start i...

I had a local guy here in St. Louis finish the hardware for the Connie a few years back. The guy had an excellent reputation with auto restoration shops and was reasonably priced. He did great work, I was happy, and the boat looked amazing. However, the chokes and cleats didn't hold up too well. Bei...

I would thing that as long as you have the correct quantity of currently approved preservers (PFD's) on board that the Coast Guard wouldn't object to the reproduction cushions with those labels (if they were to see them).

Ya, don't forget the zincs. I almost forgot to install them once. She was in the travel lift being lowered into the well when someone asked about them. Ooops! We got them on without loosing any motion; from a work boat under the dangling cruiser (not recommended).

This is exactly how our Boat Buzz Un-Plugged gathering at The Mariners' Museum got started in late 2011. We all met there in December of that year. John in VA had an active role in making that gathering a success. We were treated to an exclusive tour of the Chris-Craft Collection at the Library by P...

Re: fastener list for u22 bottom
When we took the original bottom planks off the '48 Deluxe we found several different size and type screws. One side had many slotted screws and a few R&P of larger size. The other side was 100% R&P but in 2 or 3 sizes. Possibly the starboard side was worked on by an old hat worker that preferred us...

Re: Kit Boat assembly
True! Many have heard Chris Smith (founder's grandson) tell his story of dealers ordering pre-assembled boat kits to display in their showrooms. Customers began to purchase the kit boat rather than ordering the boat kits. Note: it's a "Boat Kit" until its assembled. Then it became a "Kit Boat". The ...

Re: Garage heat sadness
Trouble with doing that in my shop is having enough separate 120 volt circuits spread around to plug them into without running new circuit wiring around the perimeter. Each 1500 watt heater would take a separate circuit. My 4KW, 240 volt unit heater required installing one new 30 amp circuit to just...

Re: Horn repair
The relay coil is a low current device but its contacts can make and break high current that is required for the horn(s). The horn button operates the relay, thus, only a low current flows through its contacts. The relay snaps the contacts together quickly, thus, eliminating arcing. The button, on t...

I just looked at the Spec Sheet that's in our Archive for the '57 Continentals. There's a photo of the 18' that has no checks but photos of the other length models show them. I'm sure they would have been shorter than 6". More likely the 4-1/2" open with teardrop base. There's a 1957 Accessories Cat...
