Re: Throttle rod bushing for 1950 CC Racing Runabout
Not absolutely positive but I believe as long as an "automotive" style steering gear assy was installed the horn operated through the wheel. Dash mounted buttons "I suspect" correlated with move to marine type or "non-auto" based steering set ups. DISCLAIMER: This is from memory and not hard documen...

Re: CC M Engine - 3 marks on oil test rod
There were at least two different dip sticks used on M engines. One was for all engines prior to Serial #75841 except twin Screw Std rotation. The other for those after Serial #75840 and twin Screw Std rotation. Oil test markings are as follows: For deep pan engines (before 1956): 5 - 15 degree runn...

According to my dealer service bulletin #18579532142 dated July 12, 1940, the sticks having three marks are to be read thusly:
Top Mark: OK
Center Mark: OH NO!
Third mark: OH SH#@ !

Have you confirmed ignition failure? Symptoms as described are also classic vapor lock. Winter blend fuels that are left over and being dumped by suppliers along with ethanol, can create an issue where not previously experienced.

Re: Proper Boat Lift
In my opinion the ultimate is the platform type with bunks just like a good trailer. Suspended at four points (or more depending upon length). The "ACE" type "Pipe" hoist works great. Additional advantages to platform include improved access to boat when lifted and great for winter storage in boat h...

When the mariners museum opens up you might try ordering the "Materials Specification" List for your model boat. If available it will tell you exactly how many and what size was used and just about everything else that went into the construction including the length, color and size of the wire.

Re: 1932 Chris Craft Bilge and bottom paint
I do not know if the use of gray bilge paint in 1932 was universal (for CC) but I am pretty sure it was used on some. I would have to dig to confirm but I have some factory photos of some 1932 models clearly showing gray. I'm sure someone will confirm or refute, but a little more research might prov...

Re: What does V/T mean on the Hull Card?
I believe you are looking at U/T intended to mean "utility". It appears that the writer did not like his initial "k" and wrote it again. Keep in mind that there was no way to erase mistakes so cross outs and doubles are not unheard of. The hull cards retained by the factory and from which your copy ...

We almost lost the only 23 barrel with twins to this very same problem when the ammeter shorted. We believe in fuse or breaker in this circuit. Also a battery switch for emergency shut off... and for when nobody's home.

Re: Looking for advice on a boat lift for my 1929 Cadet
A platform that can be lifted at four points with bunks attached running fore and aft supporting the hull beneath the main (engine) stringers. Additional supports at the chine would also be ideal. The goal is to replicate the support provided by a well designed trailer. Side guides to help center wh...

Re: A "PICKLED" ENGINE
Ohio selects option #1, preserved for long term storage. Used locally since before my time and that's quite awhile ago. Our reasoning was that pickled by definition means preserved. I can, however, understand the opposite derivation in salt water areas since brine is associated with pickling.

The extra noise in reverse is the planetary gears put into motion as a result of the reverse brake band stopping the drum. Extra parts moving around more sound. Normal.

Re: Registration numbers under varnish need changing
if painted on they were likely painted over some initial varnish coats. You may be able to very carefully sand then off with out breaking through to underlying stain. Then build up some varnish and replace registration numbers then more varnish to blend with rest of finish. It can be tricky but I ha...

Re: Water Cooling - 1963 Chris Craft
That would be true if the hard freeze event occurred prior to winterize where the entire engine was vulnerable. If the manifold in question was inadvertently neglected or did not drain properly then that individual component could have been isolated. I've seen this more times than I can count. The m...

Re: Water Cooling - 1963 Chris Craft
If cost and availability are of no concern then by all means replace. If the boat has a salt water history I would likely plan for replacement. HOWEVER, IF cost or availability are a factor AND you can determine that the crack was a freeze related fracture AND there is no internal leakage and/or exc...

Re: Water Cooling - 1963 Chris Craft
Manifolds may indeed be "rotten" but may have been cracked from freezing if a northern boat. Common fix back in the day was "marine tex" and was often very effective in lieu of a replacement manifold. If the jacket is only compromised externally then a redo of similar material may fix your leak. Mak...

Lower color is red. The red/white scheme was popular with a number of models of the period. I have a vague memory of the colors being switched from top to bottom on some (year) models but without research don't take my word for it. I have never seen an original blonde holiday without two tone stripe...

Don, I agree completely. Debate makes it fun and draws out the info we crave. This is supposed to be fun. This is a boat club not a fight club. Greg, this is very well discussed in a brass bell article that don and maybe brian? wrote about 5 years ago. there are 3 colors, the darkest blue is pre-war, the somewhat lighter is post war, and the small block chevy is the lightest blue. They are also discussed here in the boat buzz, and there wa...
