Nice!!

I tried to post pictures of my Lyman and Speedifour but it won't work for me. The result was what you see in my above post, nothing but the URL.

The Javelin, especially the gold version, is a coveted engine, and that Lyman is beautiful!

How do I post a picture? I've registered, logged in and still get only the URL to appear.

Vintage Motors

Matt, I disagree. I run nothing but vintage motors on my boats and I'm not afraid to cruise with them. While I will not dispute the fact that those motors are a bit more polluting, vintage motors account for such a small percentage of motors in use that their "pollution" is negligable. Nothing takes...

17' Sportsman Engine Cover

John, Thanks---that sort of confirms what I thought. If you do come across a picture, it would be a great help. The one presently on my cover just doesn't seem structurally sound in design, but maybe that's the way it is! Double boater---no, I haven't met Tom Petty but I have a lot of friends that k...

Engine Cover in '55 Sportsman with KLC

My 1955 17' Sportsman has a small cover on the side of the engine box to allow for the extra width of the KLC carb. It seems to be an afterthought and a great toe stumper. Is it correct?

Does anyone have a picture of a correct engine box for the KLC? if so, what are the dimensions?

Drain holes

Going back to my earlier post, you can see that with the type garboard drain shown it is difficult to get all the water and debris out of the bilge. Those are good for ridding the bilge of water while underway but their location and height on the inside prevents them from being ideal in clearing the...

Drain Plugs

Regarding the through hull in the bottom vs transom, I find that it is more difficult to "corner" the debris with that type plug whereas one in the transom sort of corners the stuff and with a hose you can direct it out. I've never worried about finding rot. If you drill the hole for a drain tube an...

Bilge Drains

I was visiting Woody Boater's site tonight and there was a topic about cleaning the bilge of oil residue. Matt had been using a bunch of rags and other stuff to clean his bilge. I've often thought an ideal installation would be 2 drain tubes w/plugs in the transom as found on modern outboard boats--...

Cavalier Hull Number

I had a 1958 15' Cavalier. The hull number was stamped on the brass Chris Craft tag and also in the mahogany tow rail under the bow light. I think it was also stamped on the strut's support frame inside the boat.

17' Sportsman trailer

Brian, that is a good question! All I can think is sometimes the boats come on trailers where the owner has little experience in trailering. My 15' Cavalier was on a conventional trailer that was re-bunked for it, and whoever did it did a marvelous job. Easy to load and when loaded it was nestled we...

Bow Eye

Thanks for all the input. I am well aware of using the bridle strap to bring the boat onto the trailer. I've seen a couple of 17's w the bow eye and in order to install it you must cut that rare bent chrome strip.

I'll forego the bow eye! Thanks for all the good input.

Bow Eye for 17' Sportsman

I'm restoring a 1955 Sportsman and want to install a bow eye to aid in winching the boat onto the trailer. Years ago I saw a '58 Sportsman with one. The question is, is the stem strong enough to handle the pull? I had a 15' Cavalier with one and had no problems. The previous owner did like many do a...

KLC Waterpump

It probably has a gear pump and the gears are worn. There are grease cups on the side of the pump--fill them with grease, screw them down and try it again. Start the engine, see if it primes. Run it for a while, shut it down for a few minutes then restart it. If it doesn't pump, replace it. I had a ...

K Block welding

The issue I have with buying another block is you don't know what you are getting until you've purchased it and disassembled it. I don't have an issue with using JB Weld in certain areas. Areas where there are extreme heating and cooling worry me and that's where I have cracks. The end of the block ...

Block Welding

I've seen Crowe's ads. The company in Jacksonville is a commercial enterprise. They heat the block in an oven, do the welding and the cooling process and guarantee it. I was hoping someone might have used them. Also was looking for someone who has had their block done and had satisfactory results. S...

Welding cracks in a K block

I've got a KLC for my '55 Sportsman and there are numerous cracks in the block. Both the spare blocks I have also have cracks. There is a company in Jacksonville Florida, and there are others across the US, that specialize in welding blocks by first heating them in a furnace. Has anyone on this boar...

Why not have it welded? If you are going to have it welded, try to determine why it cracked and try to reslove that too.

Thanks Don! By the way, I'm beginning to think the bottom was green also. I started cleaning the through hull fittings and green is the last color to come off. Green Bilge

I haven't seen the hull card yet but it's on my list of things to acquire. I was referring to the bilge's interior. Yes, the boat originally had copper bottom paint. I'll be interested to find out the flooring used. This is the second boat I've acquired that is registered with an incorrect year. Hul...

Well, so far no replies. I've contacted Kirby's Paint after reading other posts. His suggestion was to take something with a sample of the color to a paint store and go through their color swatches. I'm restoring a 1955 17' Sportsman that originally had a green bilge. I've spoken with Kirby paints and they do not have a formula for the original color nor were they aware of it. I'm not all that familiar with the gear pump. I have a KLC also and plan on installing a rubber impeller pump once the engine rebuild is completed. What I would be checking is to see if the gear is pinned to the shaft and if so, is the pin broken.

I restored a '58 15ft 20 years ago. It had a factory fiberglass bottom. In the process of restoring it I removed the glass and re-glassed the bottom. In removing the original there was no area of deterioration. The glass protects the plywood from abrasion.

To make one of those is an easy machining job on a lathe. I doubt seriously that the thread pitch is unusual but it could be. If you have a friend with an outboard, bring the outboard stern first towards the boathouse making sure you have plenty of water for the outboard.
