Sportsman pics

Hi Jim, No, I didn't receive those pictures but found a post with some on there. They didn't show me what I was looking for though. What I need is a close up picture of the rub rail from the bow back about 4 feet so I can see how the rub rail overlaps. On my boat, and someone redecked it some time a...

Tom,

Thanks so much for the lead. I'll check out his site.

I see you have a KLC in your Sportsman. Is there a build-out on the side of your engine box to accomodate the larger carb?

Paint

Thanks Al. This has been my second post in the past few months. No one has replied except you! Hopefully someone knows where to get the green paint and what it is called.

1956 Sportsman Bilge Color

I've got a '56, 17' Sportsman I'm restoring. The bilge was originally green. Is there a matching green paint out there? Someone painted over the green with the red but I'd like to keep it correct. Also, it seems ChrisCraft painted the bilge frame parts prior to assembly which seems like a lot of ext...

My dad had a 1958 30 foot SeaSkiff full cabin with a pair of Ks @ 95hp each. Cruising at 2700 yielded around 18mph based on runs between buoys of measured distances. We later repowered with 283s @ 185hp each. We didn't have a speedometer but we had a 13' Boston Whaler with a 40hp Evinrude and dad in...

Mr. Whatley, could you atke a couple of close-up pictures of the rub rail at the bow and on the side near the stern? I'm also doing a 17' Sportsman and someone altered the rubrail and pictures from you would help greatly.

Thanks,
George

Hull Number

Hi,

I had a 1958 Cavalier 15' utility. The hull number was found on the metal ID tag that was on the inside of my engine box, but it was also stamped into the wood where the bow light is mounted directly behind the bow light.

17'Sportsman rub rail design

I'm restoring a 1956 17' Sportsman that has had previous work done on it. The outside rubrail I think has been slightly changed and I'm hoping someone who has that series boat could post a close-up picture of the rail at the bow and along the stern side of the boat. The previous work has the stainle...

Tom,

Thank you so much for the reply! I thought the engine box was original and you confirmed that.

Thanks for the reply--the box I have has the raised area on the bottom port side--not the top. It is to allow for the huge single updraft carb on the KLC. I got the impression yours is a tri carb.

1956 Sportsman Engine Box

My 1956 17' Sportsman has a KLC engine. The engine box has a cut out on the side with a 1 piece wood raised area to allow room for the large updraft carb. The design of the box is such that that area always flexes when moving the box. It's impossible to frame around that area and be able to clear th...

Cracked block repair

I have several KLC/K blocks--all have cracks between the water passageways. There is a company in Jacksonville Fl. that specializes in blockwelding. I notice that Van Ness also does blockwelding. Has anyone had such a procedure done? Successfully? How common are these cracks in the K series blocks? ...

Don't remove the exhaust elbo from the engine. Laeve it on and remove the nut that connects the pipe to the elbo. I used a large chain wrench on mine and it also required significant heat from a torch to the nut. By doing that, you don't disturb the pipe at the transom. Likewise, install the new elb...

"K" Block differences

Thanks to Wilson for sending me all the printed material on the K engines. Maybe someone can answer this question: Why are the pistons different in the K and the KLC? I know the crank is different as that's how you get the longer stroke--but why are the pistons different? I've been checking out many...

Thank you both! Those were the best replies I've ever gotten. Wilson told me the blocks were the same with different cams, cranks and pistons. Now I can move ahead with my project.

Roger, thanks for the reply.

My office Fax # is 1-352-376-1184--I'd appreciate a copy of the pamphlet with the specifications.

KLC specifications

I've just purchased a 17' Sportsman with a KLC. The engine block is cracked and I'm looking-- Found a K block. What are the differences? Which hercules block is the KLC? Where can I find engine specifications?

Thanks!

George
