Re: The Wooden Boat Thing

For some people owning vintage cars and boats isnt hard.....they have sufficient disposable income. They simply get a restorer, and pay them to put the boat in working condition at the level they desire....not much hardship involved....just a financial decision. A lot of rich folks only need to be c...

Re: Connie Refresh

Hey, I hear you. I am certainly not in a position to write cheques for my restoration. I had help two years ago for sixteen weeks fulltime, and Bob and I completed a lot of work. After that, I had to proceed on my own, and I am not finished yet! This bunch of work hurt, both in monetary terms and in...

Re: Dream Shop

I absolutely echo Jim's comment on 3 phase. You can buy 3 phase equipment for a fraction of what you would pay for good single phase, simply because of the power. The industrial community wants the latest, and the homeowner doesn't have 3 phase, so you get a tool that you would never wear out for ve...

Re: Connie Refresh

Just to clarify, the Stimson bowshed is one of the most successful low cost temporary building designs in recent years. It is incredibly strong, and easy for an amateur to build and maintain. It has been used by professional and amateur builders and restorers for many many projects. It is not a plas...

Re: Connie Refresh

Here I be. I would either build a conduit building, which uses welded junctions, or a Stimson bow shed. The bow shed is really the least expensive way to go, and will withstand severe snow, since it sheds the load. It uses 1X4 strapping and construction grade lumber, and clear poly as a cover, which...

Re: Copper Tube

I would have to say that this is really a question of the equipment used. There is a whole host of applications that are used in industry that would have even more difficult materials and more complex bends. The question is whether you have access to really good equipment. Here is a benchmark.... ht...

Re: Can My Chris-Craft Cruiser Be Saved?

I think it's a 55' Constellation, (1961-62, 72 hulls built),but it's been chopped up some. The ports aren't right for anything, and looks like the transom has been reconstructed. The wooden rail tops, the shape of the forward cabin windows and side windshield give it away. Tom Kenny has one ...M/V I...

Re: Copper Tube

This is a learning curve for me... How big is this pipe? Soft tube comes up to 3/4 and it bends very easily. L tube, if annealed bends easily too, with either spring benders or Ridgid style benders. One of these days I am going to buy a Baleigh bench mounted set.

I have often wondered about this question in regards to many of the CC models. I would think there are quite a few not registered, but certainly a lot are gone. I would think that the 'barn finds' are getting pretty slim.

BTW, big folkboat fan. Truly a great design.

This is a true torque motor. It makes 590 ft lb from 3300 to 4400 rpm Oh yeah. Thanks Paul. I have been playing with the idea of getting a cam reground..... I do want to blueprint the intake manifold and make that match as good as possible.... and exhaust too. Generally these engines didn't breathe...

That's a cool boat John, you seem to be coming along nicely. I wondered while looking at the pics whether it was Cedrela, and obviously that came up later in the thread. Good info on the sleeving Jim.... I always have to consider that I am in fresh water only, and that I predominantly deal with V8's from the middle fifties and forward. The ARP replacements advice is well taken. I usually overhaul the valve train on all my V8's using roller rockers and so on, but obv...

There are some knowledgeable engine folks here, but I will chime in on a few of my 'must haves' Older engines were crude, and badly manufactured in comparison to a modern engine, so some of my must haves are processes that correct, as much as possible, the original faults of a given engine. These pro...

One thing about the 283, a lot of them were made, and many more were made that go together identically to the 283 with minor (and dimensional) variation. Something like a hundred million SBC motors were made and all off them have needed some sort of service so there is a very big famaliarity factor...

Yes, they are woven surface, it was impregnated with some oil or varnish to make it water resistant, which it wasn't,and caused fires, and most of them would not have been zinc coated either. Modern replacement would be poly coated, ABYC would be zinc coated wire strand, and gauge depends on length....

Re: Sherwood like PUMP...mystery...HELP!

It's not an argentine pump, I think it's an old Jabsco, but tell me if the cover is flat or cast bronze with a shaft socket. If the the latter is correct, it is probably a Sherwood, the precursor to an E35, but not absolute, Sherwood made flat covers too. The separated base makes it earlier. It may ...

You can buy them on ebay occasionally.... they are pot metal, Zamack, so they pit more easily than most metals.

I have to get mine rechromed too. They can be repaired by filling in the pitting then polished out.
