Re: Green Bottom Paint

Thanks for the suggestions. I know about using alkyd enamels but Kirby's paints seem to me to be soft. I had them mix a semi-gloss green for my bilge as it was green originally. A simple scrape with a fingernail yields a mark, so I thought having it on the bottom would not have good results when con...

Green Bottom Paint

I've seen several restorations where the bottom paint is a dark green. The polyurethanes are not recommended for immersion over 3-4 days. The antifouling paints available only have 1 green color for all the different levels of product and it is more of a turquois than a green. So what do people use ...

Re: Can't get all the bungs to bleach out

Yes, the bungs are all the same wood----Honduras mahogany. That's what I can't understand; why some will and some won't. I've decided to do another complete bleacing, and it will be the last one!

Can't get all the bungs to bleach out

I've bleached the hull on my Sportsman twice now and I still have a dozen or so bungs on one side of the boat that will not bleach out. What is weird is the bungs on the other side of the hull all bleached out. Suggestions? I don't want to bleach again. Also, what is the mix percentage for white vin...

So, how do you mix it? Directions call for equal parts, but if there are splotches to use the peroxide by itself to remove the splotches.

Should I bleach the entire hull?

1955 17' Sportsman that had 2 planks on one side and one on the other replaced with honduran mahagony. ( Why?--I don't know). The boat is upside down and 2 planks are at the shear and one in the middle of the hull. When the hull was re-fastened honduran mahagony was used for all the bungs. I've blea...

Re: Effects of a heat gun on planking

The 2 part mixed I was referring to is mentioned in the same article of the quote you posted. I'm using bleach to whiten 3 replacement planks that are honduras mahagoy that someone before me used on my Sportsman. They are really red and stick out in appearance. I have a Home Depot close to us---I'll...

Re: Effects of a heat gun on planking

Which bleach kitm do you use? years ago I tried the oxallic (SP?) and had no success. I read that there is only one type bleach for color removal and that is the combination of sodium hydroxide and hydrogen peroxide.

Re: Effects of a heat gun on planking

Yes, that would be a good idea to check before and after moisture levels. When I use the heat gun on varnished surfaces I come back with a liquid stripper to get the remaining stain out then sand lightly.

Effects of a heat gun on planking

Modern strippers are pathetic on old paint so I use a heat gun and have good results. The question is, "what are the effects on the structure of the mahagony when exposed to heat'? Are there long term effects" ? I am very careful not to overheat an area. I move fast and have developed a routine that...

Re: Shop drawings for extended Hdtp to fit 1951 DCFB 34ft CC

My father had a 30' 1958 Sea Skiff when I was a kid. Dad bought the boat when it was less than 1 year old. The previous owner had the top extended and it really improved the lines of the boat in my opinion. Since we live in Florida, the extra shade was greatly appreciated. The extension copied the o...

This is wierd. About a week ago when I log on, the drop downs on the opening page will not work. If I put the cursor over any of the headings, they turn green but nothing happens. Here is the wierd part: If I go to Woody Boater and click on any CCABC topic, it takes me to the topic and shows me as b...

Worms

I just have to tell this story. I'm from Pensacola Fla. and my dad kept our 30' 1958 Sea Skiff in Bayou Chico off Pensacola Bay in those days. Bayou Chico was so heavily polluted that there was no type of marine life existing in that water. Several chemical companies dumped their effluent into Bayou...

I tried to post pictures of my Lyman and Speedifour but it won't work for me. The result was what you see in my above post, nothing but the URL.

The Javelin, especially the gold version, is a coveted engine, and that Lyman is beautiful!

Vintage Motors

Matt, I disagree. I run nothing but vintage motors on my boats and I'm not afraid to cruise with them. While I will not dispute the fact that those motors are a bit more polluting, vintage motors account for such a small percentage of motors in use that their "pollution" is negligable. Nothing takes...
