Ripped out the nasty carpet yesterday. Luckily it was not glued down. Nice textured fiberglass floor under the carpet. It is probably the original flooring. Lots of holes tho. Replaced windshield wiper arm/blade. Can't get the motor to start. Need to see a man about that issue. I'll eventually have ...

1966 CC Corsair Sport V

I finally did it. I jumped in and obtained a Chris-Craft. Now I'll get the respect and admiration at boat shows that has been sorely lacking all these years with my Thompson boats. I obtained a 1966 Chris-Craft Corsair 17'-6" Sport V outboard fiberglass runabout! She's in pretty good shape - ...

The 1968 Chris-Craft Corsair by Thompson Boat Company of New York, Inc. brochure shows the 23 ft. Lancer. The text indicates she was available with 150 HP V-6; 185 HP V-8; or twin 120 HP units.

I had a telephone call from Ted Thompson, Jr. and his wife Gloria about a week before the gathering to invite me. Alas, I had already made plans for a vintage boating cruising weekend in Missouri (which was a blast). Hope it was a good event. Ted reminded me again of a weekend he had with my father ...

Here are TWO 1955 Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. (Peshtigo, WI) Thomboy boats. The one on the left obviously needs a bit of a restoration. The one on the right is in original condition, other than maintenance coats of varnish and bottom paint added. The boat in the upper portion of the shot is a Higgi...

Thompson Boat Company of New York, Inc. did NOT have a fiberglass boat program when Chris-Craft purchased them in January 1962. I don't care what Jeff Rodegen's book said or what other sources said. Thompson of NY was NOT making fiberglass boats in 1961 or early 1962. It was only AFTER the Chris-Cra...

You have to remember that the Corsair Division of Chris-Craft grew out of Thompson Boat Company of New York, Inc. Thompson had its own dealer network in a product line that was not covered by Chris-Craft prior to 1962. That's one of the reasons CC purchased Thompson of NY. I am sure they began to sl...

Lag bolt and lag screw are the same thing. They are just a giant screw with a hex head (today) and square head (in the olden days). I use 'em all the time in timber connections. 3/4 inch diameter x 20 inch long is not unusual. Thompson Bros. Boat Mfg. Co. used lag screws to attach the lifting ring b...

I don't know anything about Chris-Craft dealers, but Oluf Mikkelsen Company was a major marine dealer located at 393 Fourth Avenue in New York City. The Iowa Great Lakes Maritime Museum is right smack in the middle of the vintage boat show site. The Arnolds Park Amusement Park (think old time Coney Island) is right there too. Wellcraft is part of Genmar. Their website gives their address as Cadillac, Michigan. So Genmar probably moved Wellcraft's operation into the Four Winns plant.

Just google "Wellcraft" and you'll get their website.

It's very weird. For at least a decade the Minneapolis Boat Show provided us a space of 40' x 80'. They cut us down by about 20% last year and now we have a postage stamp sized space. It makes NO sense to me. But, we are their guests so we can't complain a whole lot

Mpls Boat Show & classics

The Minneapolis Boat Show takes place 21-25 January in downtown Minneapolis, MN. The Bob Speltz Land-O-Lakes chapter of the Antique & Classic Boat Society (www.acbs-bslol.com) will have a small display of classic boats. Our space has been cut by 75% compared to past years, so it will be a very diffe...
