Flipping 23 foot Continental

Today we flipped the 1956 23 footer over , took less than an hour . Time for Laurie to pull bottom screws and after that I will take off the whole bottom at once . One side at a time.

Re: What are you working on during lock downs?

Update , Decks done for now , will flip and address the bottom. I did a 5200 bottom on CL 23-006 a few years back . I agree that the continentals do not have the best ride , we call them slappies . But they are great boats for entertaining , putting, and ride fine on calm water. The continentals hav...

Re: What are you working on during lock downs?

Hey Steve, I have a complete windshield less glass for your continental if you need one. Re-Chromed. Was going to convert sedan to open and decided not to. Have a few other bits left over as well. Best looking, hardest riding utility ever. Still miss it. Hi Greg , Thanks for the offer of the windsh...

What are you working on during lock downs?

Hi All , Just wanting to see how everyone is doing this winter and asking what you are working on this winter . One of the projects I am working on is one of my own . I always wanted a utility and have a fondness for Continentals . This is a 1956 23 footer with a MCL. I started with the decks as thi...

Re: 21' capri deck replacement

That plan with a jig will work, the fade out of depth at the end of the cut can be accomplished by hand by lifting the router at the end of the cut. If I remember it is only a few inches long.

Re: 21' capri deck replacement

I know what you are saying it takes a little skill, I was a tool and die maker with a lot of engraving and mold making experience. Thus it comes easy for me to saw and router to a line. We used to follow lines scribed on steel and cut on a bridgeport mill by moving x and y handles by hand and eye. B...

Re: 21' capri deck replacement

Mike letting all the top secrets out . We cut the old deck at the recess , place on new deck and scribe one side of the groove. Measure and scribe the other side of the deck groove . We use a 5 1/4 dewalt cordless saw and carefully cut the outline of the recessed deck groove. Then the tricky part is...

Re: 1941 K Distributor Cap and Rotor

Yup, the pertronixs can have phantom problems and give a boat owner fits. I have learned from my mentor Jim Anderson from Hartland that a good clean set of points, a good condenser , working distributor ,cap, wires, etc. and charged up battery is all you need for care free boating. Heck the engines ...

Re: Z Spar or Epifanes Varnish?

Yup , Matt is right, Kind of like Beer , Miller, Bud, Import , it is what you are comfortable with and all will get the job done. Most or all varnish problems or fails are due to other factors and they do not include the varnish . Books have been written about the proper ways to varnish and prep.

Re: 1955 17 ft Chris Craft alignment

I saw an old time fix this condition 25 years ago. He put a bottle jack between the trans and stringer and cranked it over. I said what are you moving to make this work and the answer is the lag bolts. He also had a pipe wrench welded to a 8 foot bar that he put on the strut to tweak it . A bit extr...

Slick seam is made of 78% blended waxes and saturated hydrocarbons

Re: 5200 Bottom. Space planks??

I did my first bottom in 1992 following Don's method with leaving a gap between bottom planks. I use a popsicle stick between planks during fit up . The nice thing with the gap is you can see the 5200 ooze out when you screw down the bottom planks . This assures complete evacuation of air and builds...

I am finally done with customer boats and will be getting this 19 footer ready for the international boat show. This 19 foot barrel was originally delivered to Montréal Canada in 1939. I will do the minimal amount of restoration in order to get the Chris to be a user preserved survivor boat. To date...
