Re: Varnish over gold leaf

Tom, I used a foam brush. The varnish was applied lightly and slowly, but I'm not sure that was necessary. I think the gold leaf was pretty well attached to the sizing. I have since changed my varnish application method. The varnish is rolled on horizontally with a 4" foam roller, then rolled vertic...

Re: Varnish over gold leaf

Hello Tom, I have done only one gold leaf job, but it turned out pretty well and the owner of the boat gave it a score of 85 out of 100. I'm working on improving that number. There wasn't a problem with small flakes - they all seemed to disappear with a light brushing. One thing that the owner insis...

Re: KL stalling issue

Was working on a 390 Ford Interceptor (Century) a year ago that had somewhat similar symptoms. The engine would runs great for some minutes, then lose RPM for a few seconds to the point of nearly stopping, then come back. The engine would repeat this continuously. It was the distributor condenser. J...

Re: 6volt Horn Relay

The horn ring on the steering column isn't working, so the owner thought a momentary push button mounted under the dash would be OK. The routing is the same - relay-to-switch, then switch-to-ground. In another forum somebody said that 6 volts isn't enough to operate the electro-magnet in a 12 volt r...

6volt Horn Relay

Could someone tell me if a Standard HR106 (3-pin) is the right horn relay to use with a 6 volt system in a 1951 CC Sedan. This relay was recommended by two sources. The horn works great when direct wired to the battery with a momentary button, but doesn't work at all when the relay is added to the c...

Would anybody happen to know what the white deck vinyl used on Caravelles was called?
Thanks for any help.

Re: Casters for boat cradle

For our 20' Continental I used 6" casters also, but 8" casters with brakes would have been better. It was a bit hard to maneuver until I took the engine out. Now it moves very easily. The advice I've always heard is to go bigger on the caster size than you think you'll need.

Re: Engine Operating Temperature

Thank you very much guys. This was something of a "fishing expedition" of my own creation (never do that again) and I just wanted some backup to leave the engine alone. No sense looking for improvements on an engine that is working very well.

Thanks again.

Engine Operating Temperature

Is there any good reason to mess with a '67 big block Ford engine that is running at 120° without a thermostat. The specs say it should be 140°. The engine has been running great for a long time. The only thermostat available for this engine is a 160° unit that would require holes being drilled in i...

If you read the previous post, the boat stays here - it has never been to Washington state.

After reading more than one report of infected boats being intercepted at loading ramps in your state, it's probably safe to say it's only a matter of time . . .

Brian & Doug, Thank you for the information. It was very helpful. As far as "outside cure time", the boat went directly from my shop into storage about 50 miles from here (and it was overcast and cool when the transport came for it). So, the boat has had almost no time in the sun. I'll let the owner...

Shrink Wrap for transport

Slightly more than a month ago I completed refinishing a 30' triple cockpit using Epifanes varnish on the deck and transom, and Yacht Enamel on the sides. Would an epoxy lamination of two 1/8" panels work in this situation? You would have the flexibility of working with 1/8" and the durability of 1/4" when finished.

Doug,

The 3M Hand Glaze I use is:
P/N 05990 - quart size, clear bottle with tan glaze
P/N 39007 - pint size, black bottle

I think they are the same formulation. The quart size also shows up on the web in a bright yellow bottle.

Re: The Wipe Down

I should have qualified the lacquer thinner business. The one time I used it on a sanded Z-Spar refresher coat over an existing Epifanes finish, it lifted the Z-Spar completely. It never touched the Epifanes underneath. I've stayed with Epifanes since that.

Re: The Wipe Down

I stopped using tack cloths after the 3rd or 4th warning about “wax transfer”. Now, it’s a rolled up ball of cheesecloth that’s been dabbed with Epifanes. Just enough to make it tacky. This way, the “tack” in the cloth is completely compatible with the varnish being used. Sanding between coats is do...

Wow. That looks like something you'd see in an old J.C. Whitney catalog. Fortunately, Fel-Pro was kind enough to provide a 2-piece seal, and the crank didn't need to come out.
