Re: Final varnish coat?

Just a quick update and thanks to all that took the time to respond and offer advice to help me accomplish the varnish work. I’ve learned A LOT. Varnish is some touchy stuff but I’ve “started to sorta “ get the hang of it. Total of six layers on the decks. Four before striping and two after. Transom...

Re: Final varnish coat?

Yes I kind of figured a patch job was a bad idea. There’s no short cuts in old wooden boats! Actually she’s gonna look pretty good. Thanks Mark

Re: Final varnish coat?

I run a Taxidermy studio and am a detail oriented perfectionist by nature. Drives my wife crazy! It’s double edged... my clients come to me for that very reason. I tend to hit a few homers but not always. Some are better than others. I know what you’re saying and I never but never point out flaws to...

Re: Final varnish coat?

Also I’ve always wondered, is it possible and will it hold up to simply sand a finished area and “patch in” a small section of new varnish? Lightly sand an area and use brushing thinner for a chemical tooth around edges. Will it blend and hold up? I know it’s not right but will it work?

Re: Final varnish coat?

Well I completed my final coat yesterday. I’m pretty happy except for one small area on side rail next to cockpit starboard side. It’s about a 10” area that’s just kinda gritty. Not sure how it happened or what it is. Very shiny but has grit feel to the surface. The rest of this coat is like glass. ...

Re: Final varnish coat?

Yes I will try that mix. Hoping it won’t get sticky too quickly. Currently it’s been very humid here so I’m watching weather for better temps. Unfortunately the best day a far as temps it’s going to rain. So I’ll be running a dehumidifier. Starting at 75% I can usually get it down around 55-60% over...

Final varnish coat?

What I’ve done so far: This was a revarnish of a 10 year old varnish application and is merely to bring the boat up to par and repair the effects of previous negligence and mistreatment. If this last coat is good enough to run for a couple seasons, I am ok with varnishing again here in a couple year...

Re: Front and rear deck re varnishing.

Thanks sometimes I make things harder than they really are. I didn’t loosen locking but so entire rod pulled out but I’m sure it’ll be fine. I’ll reset lock nut later if need be.

Front and rear deck re varnishing.

Preparing to revarnish both decks and upper rails. All hardware is off except windshield and lifting rings. Windshield comes off next. I’d like to remove lift rings but not sure how to do it. I’ve had tank out several times before but don’t want to do it again if I don’t have to. I’ve looked at hard...

Re: 283 engine ID plates

I remembered seeing a post on this, a little searching and it was found. Go to Hardware and Rigging and look for “How to clean manufacturing plates” Yes it’s possible with metal polishes (Flitz) but some like the aged appearance. Patina I believe it’s called. I too like the aged look. As with fine S...

Re: Rebuilt carb issues M27

Well the engine received a complete overhaul in June. Complete tear down and rebuild of all components needing work. Carb points rotor cap. 12 volt conversion. It did idle at the 850 900 which is what builder said is desired. Just seems that 1000 is a bit high but IDK...it drops to around 900 in gea...

Rebuilt carb issues M27

Zenith updraft has been rebuilt. Great throttle response and smooth acceleration. Hits about 33-3400 no problem. Very smooth and effortless. Two problems. Won’t idle well below 1000 or 1100 rpm. For a short time, once maybe, it was good at 800-850. Not anymore. 1000 that’s it. Starts and shuts down w...

Paint color for ‘48 CC m27 engine?

Kind of a newbie but I’m trying to learn all I can about the original paint options on this engine. I’m having it rebuilt therefore also painted. It appears the only color visible on the block is silver. Can this be original paint? Most everything I’ve seen has been some shade of blue. But as I say ...

Trailering in sub freezing temps

I plan to pull a U-22 for about 8 hrs in sub freezing temps this month. This wood hull is finished with a glass mat(mostly15oz.)and fiberglass lay up with medium density filler compound. Yes I will be winterizing engine with antifreeze before I leave. With out a long and detailed dissertation of my ...

Re: Best way to secure transome to trailer?

Wasn’t sure where the best place to post a few more pictures would be so what the heck here goes. This boat was delivered to my family January 1948 to Masters Marine on Walloon Lake Michigan. It had stayed there it’s entire life until 2 years ago when it was passed on to me. I remember riding in it ...

Re: Best way to secure transome to trailer?

As the OP, I wanted to show how I “had” been securing the transom. Not any more. As you can see my bow post is good but I will be keeping the cutwater away from bow stop. I really didn’t get much flapping from the strap as most pulling was local and low speed. However I intend on transporting to Min...

Re: Best way to secure transome to trailer?

Thank you. Ok I will do that now. Can anyone confirm it’s NOT a great idea to strap as I described? I was told it would destroy the boat in some way. I didn’t question it but I’m now curious because I’ve seen a couple up and over rail as described. As with my glass rig which has boat buckles it’s on...

Best way to secure transome to trailer?

I’ve always used a ratchet strap snug, but not tight ..from port frame rail up and over step pad through lift ring and back down starboard side the same way. Apparently this is not a good idea. Can anyone tell me the best way and provide a picture of this. I understand that wrapped around the strut ...
