Different, Yes
However, Chris Craft built over 40,000 of the 283 flywheel forward engines between 1958-68
using this setup, apparently without any issues.

According to the C C Engine Master Record books I have, the
Model M 12606 was originally installed in Hull R-20-079, a
1946 20ft Custom, and it looks like all of the hardware is from
the same boat.

According to the Master Engine Log that I have,
ML-79198 was originally installed in Hull# U-22-1747, a 22ft Sportsman
with a recorded date of 3-19-51

According to the CC Engine Master Records, KLC s/n 60659 was originally installed in hull CC-17-233 which
was shipped from Chris Craft on 2-4-1953

According to the kit directions, you drill a 3/8 hole thru the top of the flame arrestor
and install the rubber grommet in that hole.
You then insert metal tube thru grommet and connect hose to that.

Carter sells a kit #888-74 to connect the vent tube to the flame arrestor.

I would suggest giving Tom a call Harpurs Marine Engines in Wilmington 310-830-0693
He has many years of experience in rebuilding the Chris Craft flathead engines.
