Re: De-Winterizing XK19 After Five Years
Chad, thanks for chiming in here. I was so hoping that you would be able to give Tom some guidance.
Even though I am very familiar with this boat, it has been seven years and my memory is not what it used to be.
I look forward to you both adding photos as your work progresses.
Patrick

Re: De-Winterizing XK19 After Five Years
Forgot to mention, I did replace a section of the floor in the engine compartment. On the starboard side I believe. You will most likely have to pull up the vinyl floor you to see it. Sounds minor to other issues and probably still sound. Even if the stringers need replacing, nothing you could not h...

Re: De-Winterizing XK19 After Five Years
That is very odd indeed. Was there possibly some infestation that was deterred by chemicals in the engine compartment? I really have no idea what kind of wood they used for the seat frames, probably fir or spruce. Be careful when grinding or cutting away the glass. First, because of inhalation expos...

Re: De-Winterizing XK19 After Five Years
Hi Tom, Sorry to hear that problems have arisen with the boat. All is not lost however. These boats are reallly quite simple in their construction, although it will take a lot of time, tools and patience to make it right. The flooring is either 5/8 or 3/4 in h plywood, as are the seatbacks and botto...

Good luck with that, they are definitely getting harder to come by.

XK18, May be a sweetheart of a deal
Hi everyone, For the few of you that I have been in touch with for the past couple of years, I am back in the USA. Specifically, in the Houston area for a couple of weeks. I am doing some training for my new job and then will be working in southern LA, but most likely living in the Atlanta area. So,...

Re: The Wipe Down
I agree 100%, wiping down with mineral spirits will cause problems. You are certainly more apt to see peeling varnish if you keep using it. It leaves a residue that is not conducive to finish adhesion.

Re: The Brass Bell, Issue 4 2013
Thanks Don, I look forward to seeing that issue, and the new one. Regarding Herr Hipel and his address, I do not see why it would get lost based on the way the address is presented. In Deutschland, they typically put the zip code before the city. However, this should not be a problem because I recei...

Re: The Brass Bell, Issue 4 2013
I never did receive # 3 here in Germany, if somewhere has a slightly used copy they would be willing to forward, that would be great.
I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving. No Turkey sightings in Deutschland though.

I am still waiting for the last issue to arrive here in Germany.
Have any of our other European members received their issue yet?
Anxiously awaiting all of them.

Re: Best method of removing boat from a trailer
In regards to the message I just left. You are not so much walking the boat off the trailer as walking the trailer from beneath the boat. Works well with a little patience.

Re: Best method of removing boat from a trailer
If you are only painting the bottom, in theory, most of the boat doesn't have to come off the trailer. I have used an engine hoist (cherry picker) to life the stern from the trailer and a floor jack with blocks of wood under the keel to 'walk' the boat off a trailer. Yes, you can only move 2-3 feet ...

Re: Badger Hair Brushes
I had great success with the roll and tip method. Roll with a 6 inch foam roller, tipped with a 3 inch foam brush that was about half an inch thick that came to a point. They cost about $3 a piece, and I threw them away after one use. One might say this is wasteful, but I never had to worry about us...

Re: Caulking ???
An uneducated local will tell you that caulk will do the job, and to some extent it will. This is only a temporary 'fix' that will most likely do irreparable harm to your classic boat. Please do not destroy a classic because you arein a hurry to get into the water.

$30,000??? I'm not trying to pick a fight here, but does anyone realize how much these new ski 'extremes' cost these days? I just went to a boat show here in Germany and looked at a 23 foot MasterCraft ski boat with the tower, speakers and all the other bells and whistles, total cost of 151,000. Not...

This may or may not be a good way to go, but it's what I did if you cannot find replacements. I carefully measured the old ones, took photos and then carefully peeled them off. I took the remnants and taped them to some card stock to have as future reference. Then, I went to a local sign store and t...

Someone mentioned that the trains would dump overboard. Well folks, some if not all the trains here in Germany still do that. You only need to look over the edge of the platform a couple of times to see all manner of nastiness. Then you just don't look there anymore. My wife says they discourage toi...

Beautiful, they look fast, even on the trailer.
For those tempted by these, I found this one a couple of days ago. Looks complete and mostly unadulterated. Good luck.
