Re: Jabsco water pump
Had the same symptoms with the Jabsco on my K a couple years ago. No water coming out after I installed a new impeller. Saw that the pump shaft wasn't spinning so I pulled it. Discovered a crack on the notched collar (?) on the shaft. The notch mates up with the shaft that spins the distributor. Had...

Re: Fuel tank measurements
I had one made at Kehrig for my '69 19' Commander SS. I still have the original tank if you think the dimensions are the same. You are more than welcome to it. http://i1165.photobucket.com/albums/q583/mcdurren/1969%20CC%20Commander%20SS/Fuel%20Tank/EE0B7852-0FD0-44DD-9E00-14CFCF14C365_zpsdl9zmd0v.jpg

Re: Finishing a new, bare wood stern pole.
Sorry, one more tip... I refinished a raw wood pole years ago that had not been finish-sanded. I went right to stain and varnish. They are simply knocked-out on the lathe and may have scratches from being sanded with course grit sandpaper while spinning. To remove the scratches, sand the the pole le...

Re: Trailer Guides
Clever idea. I'm always launching at unfamiliar ramps. Launching and retrieval is often hurried so I wrapped my guide posts in pipe insulation for extra protection. The rubber caps on the guide posts are glow-in-the-dark so I can see them in the dark.

Re: Trailer Suspension Question
Looks like they are attached the same. The left side just looks to be more compressed than the right side. Nothing too complicated about leaf springs, adjust them so the boat sits level. The bolts could be loose or the boat just settled on the trailer unevenly over the years. Easier to adjust when t...

It appears we are in the same boat regarding rear seat framing. Mine were shot and will need to be rebuilt. My boat is in current in the bodywork phase of restoration. Re: Floor Drain
The Doug Fir and mahogany combo should work great, especially if sealed well. Some of my framing was fir as well. They were dry but not rotten. I snugged up all flooring seams tight when I cut the new flooring, trying to make the seams split the thickness of the frame below. As long as I can get a s...

Re: Floor Drain
I've got the same flooring set-up in the '69 Commander Super Sport that I'm restoring. What type of wood did you use for the framing under your floor? If you used mahogany, then you should be OK with keeping the floor seams as they were originally. My frames were in good shape. I coated the pieces i...

Re: Towing tubes/skiers. 1961 CC Ski Boat
It is NOT advised. Like you mentioned earlier, it is a lift point, strengthened and connected to the keel for vertical support. Towing puts horizontal stress on the ring and can cause damage to your deck.

Re: De-Winterizing XK19 After Five Years
Thanks, Andy. I love drilling holes with my bit brace. An old family friend gave me an antique set of Irwin spur auger bits when I was a kid. Nothing better. As for the flooring supports, my floors were supported by blocks of ply set in a glob of resin. Crude but effective. I used scraps of mahogany...

Re: De-Winterizing XK19 After Five Years
I replaced the floors in my '69 Commander SS with 1/2 inch marine ply, like the original. I cut out the floors at the edges with a multitool, leaving an inch or so of glass attached to the hull so I could slide the new floors under the lip and glass them in like before. I've added additional floorin...

Re: Now I know why they painted it
I would think a chemical stripper would do the least amount of damage to your already delaminating ply. Are you after a finished "bright" hull side? You probably won't get the best results by stripping the ply, and then you run the risk of sanding right through the ply getting down to clean wood. My...

Re: Now I know why they painted it
Famowood is a great filler and also stainable. It appears the prior owned repaired with expoxy filler (or similar) along the stem, which is totally fine because ended up painting the entire hull anyway. Not sure what Cavalier model you have. Some of them were painted hulls and some just had the top ...

Re: What Shape is the Fuel Dip Stick
Mine is mahogany (factory scrap?) It was dry, brittle and faded when I found it in the boat (I almost tossed it). It did not appear to have any finish or stain. But who knows? Years of dipping it in gas could have stripped it clean. I wiped it with some thinned varnish and mahogany stain so I could ...

Re: What Shape is the Fuel Dip Stick
My 1952 Sportsman has it's original fuel stick. It's shaped like a yard stick. Not sure what they used on other length boats and tanks but this one is accurate for an 18' boat and 20 gallon tank.
The lines are actually shallow kerf cuts into the wood. The numbers are stamped.

Welcome to the club and congrats on the rare find! I own the same model boat (hull #28). Mine is in project condition and the gas tank has been removed.
