Re: Leaking Fuel Pump
Not sure if you are still looking for info on how to install an electric fuel pump. We did this on our 1960 Capri. The wiring diagram is attached. The wiring allows the fuel pump to run while cranking the engine, then only allows it to continue to run if the oil pressure has reached the setpoint of ...

According to the Chris Craft engine manual for the 283 and 327F engines, manifold bolts should be torqued to 30 Ft lbs.

Re: amp gauge and shunt
John- Just because the VOM is showing 14 volts with no deflection on the gauge does not mean the amp gauge is not working. The gauge deflects to show the magnitude of current either charging the battery or being drawn from the battery. If the battery is fully charged, the gauge will not deflect when...

Photos of 1960 Capri Instrument Panel and Throttle
If anybody has a photo of the original configuration of a 1960 Capri instrument panel and throttle, please post one.
I got docked points for an unoriginal throttle at this year's Concourse in Tahoe but I haven't been able to see what the original configuration looks like.
Thanks,
Ward

Re: Alternator replacement
Our marina, Sierra Boat, uses a shop (Auto & Truck Electric)in Sparks, NV that does all of their classic generator/alternator repairs for them. They turned it around in 48 hours. Their # is 775-359-6584.

Re: Fuel Gauge Reads Half Full
Mike- The 33-240 ohm sender you have is standard today, but the sender units in the older boats had different resistance ranges so your fuel gauge may be calibrated for a different resistance range. Search under Electrical for Riviera Fuel gauge resistance for a thread on this topic from a couple ye...

Re: Riviera Fuel Level Sensor Electrical Resistance
I've copied my post below to a similar question raised last month. Fuel level sender units are variable resistors attached to floats or magnetic reed switches. They'll work with either 6 or 12 volts DC. The key is to be able to calibrate the sender unit with your gauge. In my case, I replaced the ol...

This may help, maybe not. Fuel level sender units are variable resistors attached to floats or magnetic reed switches. They'll work with either 6 or 12 volts DC. The key is to be able to calibrate the sender unit with your gauge. In my case, I replaced the old original sender unit with a new Moeller...

Re: Wiring of Generator
Terry- The 10 gauge wiring to the ammeter is correct; however, you need to run a 14 gauge wire from the Arm terminal on the regulator to the Arm terminal on the generator. The voltage regulator is supposed to prevent the battery from motoring the generator when the voltage output drops below the set...

Fuel Gauge Accuracy and Safety
I want to share a lesson learned regarding fuel gauge accuracy that has safety implications. We ran out of fuel on our 1960 CC Capri when the gauge showed 3/8 fuel tank level. I learned several lessons about checking fuel level before going all the way to Emerald Bay on Tahoe, but being an engineer,...

Re: Fuel Gauge does not drop with key off
Most gauges have a zero adjust screw that allows the user to set where the needle will point with no voltage on the terminals. If your gauge reads Empty with the sender at the no fuel position, I wouldn't worry about it.

I've also got a 19ft Capri, 1960. The stern ensign is 16x24. Sierra Boat in Carnellian Bay , CA. on Tahoe has them. That's where I keep my boat and they have both cotton and nylon. You can contact them at 530-546-2551.

Fuel Gauge Accuracy - 1960 Chris Craft Capri
My 1960 Capri fuel gauge shows 3/4 full when the tank is full and 3/8 full when the tank is empty. It has a 20 gallon round tank so I know I won't be able to get totally accurate readings, but I know it can be a lot better. Any suggestions on a replacement fuel sender unit or a way to calibrate the ...

Re: generator issues
Charles is correct. If you are now using a 6 volt battery, the starter relay needs to be rated 6 volts also. Your 12 volt starter relay will not pick up with 6 volts. Clearly, the generator is motoring which means that the battery is feeding the generator instead of the other way around. If the gene...

Re: Generator overcharging after switch to 8 volts?
Scottz- Your ammeter is probably right. You didn't say if you replaced your alternator or voltage regulator, but you probably didn't as I don;t know where you would find 8V generator and regulator. The most logical explanation is that you are now trying to charge an 8V battery with 6 volts. Dependin...

Re: Alternator Wiring or Failure?
Mark- The terminal marked "P" is a partial voltage terminal used in some auto applications. Don't wire anything to it. The plug-in terminal is marked "I" for ignition one side and "S" for sense on the other. Wire the "I" terminal to the ON contact on the ignition switch so it has 12V on it when the ...

Re: Alternator Wiring or Failure?
Is there a voltage regulator in the circuit? I assumed based on your picture that the alternator is internally regulated. If there is a voltage regulator on the boat, use the circuit above to wire the regulator into the circuit.

Re: Alternator Wiring or Failure?
Mark- You are correct, it will not work with only the 2 wires connected, because it needs to have 12V to the rotating field in order to make it work. You need to make the following connections: B+ Output is the 12V output of the alternator and goes to the positive terminal of the battery. B- is the ...

Re: 6 volt bilge pump replacement
Bart- I'm an electrical engineer and have a '60 Capri (with 12V system). I strongly suggest you do not use the 12 V pump with a six volt system. Besides the lower pump output, the motor will overheat if it runs for a period of time and a couple bad things can happen: 1) Motor failure with a locked r...

Greg-
Thanks for the quick reply.
BTW- Do you know when CC stopped using the brass engine nameplates and went to stainless steel? I've got both and am trying to decide which to put on the engine.

CC 327F w/ Corvette Valve Covers
I recently bought a fully restored 1960 Capri. The original engine from the hull card was a 283, but my mechanics at Sierra Boat have confirmed that the engine in the boat is now a 327F (with no engine nameplates). The engine has Corvette valve covers with no hose connections for a PCV. The rest of ...
