Re: Spar Varnish versus gasoline
It is my understanding that the fuel tank vents typically found on topsides or transoms are supposed to have the fine mesh to serve as a flame arrestor. That the screen keeps out bugs is a secondary advantage. Also, if there is enough room between the deck and the top of the tank, use marine fuel ho...

Here is what I have heard: Pre-war are slotted; post-war are Frearson, not to be confused with the ubiquitous Phillips drive. BUT. During the immediate post-war period, builders were using up their stocks of slotted screws before transitioning to Frearson, and 1946 puts your Garwood right there. It ...

Re: How To Clean Manufacturers Plates
I have had success by putting two newspaper sheets on a flat surface. Glass works great. Apply a light coat of Brasso to the news paper, then with the plate face down, just apply light pressure as you rub the plate in a figure 8. Try to avoid the plate corners digging in. Or, you can put a sheet of ...

Bleach the wood with a wood bleach product. Be sure to neutralize the bleach job with white vinegar. Sand lightly to remove the raised grain, 100 grit. I have a 26 APBA. My aft guides are set in s/s pipe, which is angled, so the PVCs are wider at their tops The top of the pipe is set such that it is below the chine with the boat on the trailer. Re: 'K' Engine Water Pump Seal Leak
If your pump is the type that uses flax packing, then yes; it should have slight leak-off. The water acts as a coolant to keep the packing from roasting at higher speeds. I am not sure of the recommended leakoff rate, but one or two drops a minuit does not seem unreasonable. Remember: Packing is alw...

Re: Intake manifold hot in middle, both sides
Most likely an automotive manifold with a feature that picks up exhaust heat to operate the choke. You will have to remove the manifold and block those passages to eliminate the burn. There are s/s blockoff tabs made specifically for that purpose, but you will have to remove the manifold to install ...

Re: cam clearance for reverse rotation 350
The cam does not expand. The reverse rotation tends to move the cam forward, or toward the timing cover. This is known as cam walk. The bevel gear at the opposite end of the cam tends to push the cam out of proper mesh with the distributor drive. Slight walk effects ignition timing. Severe walk tend...

Some starters stay engaged until the engine starts, then the flywheel rotates the starter gear to disengage it from the flywheel. My Chrysler 426D has such a starter. Does your starter have a Bendix drive attached to it? If so, retraction is handled by the Bendix drive, not the flywheel RPM. Marine ...

No matter what you decide, capture your rudder at the top of the shaft with a Cotter pin before going back into service. This is a good time to adjust or replace the shaft packing, as well. I tend to leave nothing to chance, so if it was my boat I would remove the stuffing box and re-bed it to the k...

I have used POR for years on my auto and boat engines with excellent results. I always go to bare metal, apply POR, then repeat with the color immediately in the same sequence just as the POR sets up a slight drag. Trick is to avoid going on too thick with the POR. I second coat the color after 24 h...

Not difficult to do. Run proper width tape over old waterline location, then apply green fine line tape to meet each side of the location tape being careful not to overlap or allow gapping. Re: pulling transmission gear off a 283 R15 crankshaft
You are probably dealing with too tight an interference fit. If that is so, no amount of lube is going to make any difference. The gear will have to be set up in a press and evenly heated to around 200-250 deg. F. It won't take much to reach that range. Heat sticks should be used to test temperature...
