Woodworking, carpentry, and cabinetmaking are fine skills, but they are completely different from boat restoration. The skills do not cross over.

Re: Complete & Proper way to refinish 62 Continental Runabou
Too nice of a boat to take a chance on without knowing what you are doing. Recommend you take it to a reputable restorer.
If you insist on doing it yourself, look up Dannenbergs book on Amazon, read it, then read it again before you do anything.

Re: Dave Jerome's gel stain
Joanroy, Like you, I only used is Interlux but I tried this about 5 years ago and I dont want to go back. Main reason is ease of use and lot less waste. There is no mixing, just wipe on out of the can and wipe off. Also, with paste you have to be so careful you use the exact amount of thinner when y...

Re: Dave Jerome's gel stain
You are right about subjectivity. I mix until the customer is satisfied. The "blonde" colors on Capri's etc. have always been a crapshoot. I think I have seen maybe 3 boats done in the original "blonde" but its not at all the yellow you see now. The yellow comes from aging of course, and numerous co...

Re: Dave Jerome's gel stain
Thanks Brian! I would love to just get them from Susan but I havent had any success.
How do I reach Susan? I have tried the number (s) several times and it says not in service!
Last time I talked to her in early December I ordered 6 cans and she said she will send them but nothing came.

Re: Dave Jerome's gel stain
Im thinking about mixing my own colors such as blonde, black for prewar covering boards, and other colors besides red mahogany by buying a can of wood-kote white and adding pigments. Any suggestions on what type of pigments I might try?

Re: Dave Jerome's gel stain
Interesting. I only use CPES and then only after the stain has outgassed thoroughly. I sometimes use thinned Epiphanes for a sealer but have found that CPES helps the build up of varnish.

Interesting, I talked to Wood-Kote directly. They told me Dave bought the materials from them and mixed his own colors.

Dave Jerome's gel stain
Anyone know who is handling Dave's gel stains? Since he died his widow was doing it but it seems the phone is now disconnected.
Thanks

Re: Model B head gasket
50 years of doing this I never used sealer on head gaskets. Never had a gasket fail.
But, I see nothing wrong with doing it that way, although it seems to be overkill.

No need. Be sure to re-torque the head studs again after running it a bit.

Re: Model B head gasket
Dont be sorry! No one was born with this experience!
Head gaskets are made to "crush" when installed and the head is torqued down. (Your steel gasket has copper inserts at the water passages) and once crushed, it will not seal properly.
Good luck my friend!

Suggest you never re-use a head gasket. What would be your advantage?

Im with Jim Staib on this one. Sea Skiffs should only be lifted by the rings. I have repaired many of them after people used jacks and/or bad trailer bunk placement.

Those two little marks are from my daughter's brand new bottom teeth circa 1992. I took the picture this year! The cockpit will be refinished when I get to that stage with Elude, but I will work around these for sure. She is currently doing a PhD at Columbia in NYC, which proves that varnish and ma...

Re: staining and sealing
I use David Jerome's gel stain. 503 282 8562. Unfortunately David is no longer with us but his wife is handling the business. This is far and away the best stain I have ever used...no mixing or thinning...just wipe on and wipe off. After a day or so do it again for darker color. 80-100 grit first wi...

Re: Rough starting with an M
I was not trying to insult or offend you, It had sounded like you were simply opening the choke immediately after it fired. Now the next step is that the carb will have to be rebuilt.

Re: Rough starting with an M
I suggest that if you never took a carb apart that you get a pro. Also, did you try using the choke correctly? You may not have an issue at all

Re: Rough starting with an M
You may be right, but I suggest the choke first...simple, easy and it may work. Then on to more complicated things.
