Re: Dual exhaust for 283 in a 55' Sportsman

I don't really have a good reason! I knew it came with the 6 cylinder and single exhaust and I thought the 283's came with duals from the factory. And the duals look so dang good too! Will it make it substantially louder? What are the thoughts of others that have added dual exhaust? Does anyone regr...

This is the port side manifold. But there is a starboard side available.

Re: Dual exhaust for 283 in a 55' Sportsman

Mine is a flywheel forward so the Barr manifold is definitely out of the question. Does anyone have any information on the Osco? I found a new one and it has the number 7056 7886 in the top of the manifold casting. In the bottom of the casting it has the number 11241072. I tried to locate informatio...

Re: Dual exhaust for 283 in a 55' Sportsman

That's how it is currently plumbed, with flexible hose from each exhaust manifold to a wye and then to another section of flex hose. There is about a one foot section of copper that attaches to the flex hose and goes through the transom. I talked to Jim and he advised me to use the same configuratio...

Re: Dual exhaust for 283 in a 55' Sportsman

In that case I will need to buy some copper exhaust pipe. Would anyone know if it needs to be type K, type L, or type M? I can buy it locally but I'm not sure which type it needs to be.

Dual exhaust for 283 in a 55' Sportsman

I have been rewiring my 1955 sportsman with a 283 engine. With everything torn apart it seems like a good time to add the duel exhaust I had been planning at some point. I am guessing that the single exhaust that is on it was with the original six cylinder engine. It currently has a 2 1/2 inch singl...

Re: Dual Exhaust for 283 in 1955 Sportsman

I've read on here in previous posts that the copper pipe is difficult to bend and must be annealed. I know the pipe is available from McMaster-Carr but don't know if that is the type that's acceptable for this application. Does anyone have a recommendation on a source for the annealed copper pipe an...

Dual Exhaust for 283 in 1955 Sportsman

While I have the floorboard out of the 1955 Sportsman for some rewiring tasks I was considering the installation of another exhaust port. Is there any benefit (other than sounding better) to making it a dual exhaust boat?

Re: 283 Crankcase Ventilation

Was the oil mist separator something that was replaceable or did it have to be periodically cleaned? Did that serve the same purpose as the modern day PCV valve? I wondered if there would be much (if any) oil that would pass through the tube and into the carburetor and if it would matter. I'm guessi...

Re: 283 Crankcase Ventilation

Even though its not the original way, does the way its vented now provide adequate crankcase ventilation or should I change it or add a pcv valve into the line?

Re: Sportsman Bottom Paint Questions

Thank you for the response. I can get it off the trailer and have a large shop to work in. It seemed to swell up quite well the last time it was in the water which was 5 years ago. I left it in the water for 7 days and it had stopped taking in water after the last day. The seams had sealer in them a...

Re: Sportsman Bottom Paint Questions

Thanks for your help. I noticed that the worst peeling was where the sealer pushed out of the seams when it swelled up the last time. Is that normal or would it be wise to apply a thinned first coat before applying the sealer and then painting the final coats over the entire bottom? Do you have any ...

Sportsman Bottom Paint Questions

I have a 1955 Chris Craft Sportsman with the original bottom. It had been recently painted when I purchased the boat 5 years ago. The bottom swelled up tightly and pushed out the seam sealant the first summer I owned it in 2011. It has not been in the water since Aug 2011 but has been stored in a ga...

283 Crankcase Ventilation

I have a 283 in a 1955 Sportsman. I bought the boat in 2011 and took it out one time before suffering a medical catastrophe. The last 5 years have been tough but the boat has been stored covered and inside since August 2011. I'm trying to get it back into the water this summer and I'm slowly checkin...
