fuel to new engine w/new carb
Initial start up of new engine-fuel flow
Tank is full
New fuel-water separator has fuel in it.
separator to pump- dry
pump to carb- dry
Any one have a suggestion of a safe way to establish fuel flow short of grinding on the starter with the new (tight) engine?

hauling your boat and Marvel Mystery Oil
First, Jim is the best authority on this and many other subjects. I've made note of his how-to recommendations. That said, two chemical engineers here insist (one with Chevron here for 30 yrs the other from Shell) there is NO corrosion protection from Marvel Mystery Oil (MMO). Sorry, but with my (ex...

black friday
Good to see you too, Al. Hope all is well. Want to hitch a ride on your cruiser someday. Of course a romp in the Stinger or BB is always available here for you. Cheers. Avoid Black Friday like the (black) plague. Ha!

long periods of non-ops
"The motor has not been run hard in about 2 years." Does this mean the engine is run about once a week but its been two years since you went full throttle for extended times? Or, has the engine been sitting for about 2 yrs. and not turned over? Not wanting to go off topic, but we should note general...

OUTDRIVE (ALPHA ONE MERCRUISER ) INSTALLATION-HELP
Hi all, Its been too long. I need suggestions for re-installing the 1987 Mercruiser Alpha One drive. The Official Mercruiser Service Manual Handbook reveals all the alignment parts and their functionality. However, the special tricks for re-installing the out-drive are in short supply. Here's what w...

color wire schematic index
Al, Thanks for the help with the archive maze- it worked perfectly. I got to Don's article. Now what I'm trying to find is an index that calls out which wire is yellow/red/green/blk/gray etc. Whats going here is Razz is wired but for non-show operations I converted to 12V with MSD. With 50K volts ga...

Thanks for the idea re painting. Gellcoat is more than boat is worth. Probably depends how much painting 21' Stinger would cost. This Stinger was never intended as a show boat- she satisfies the need for speed. Would be nice to make her pretty but probably too expensive to be worth it. Someone menti...

Jim's point about new filter's check valves is something to check right away. Rule 1- double-check the simple obvious things first. And, double check external oil pipes (if you have any on this 283) and determine they aren't hooked up backwards. Suggestion- if the new (rebuilt) engine has a full flo...

CC overhaul manual called for pistons to be fit at .0045". Pistons fit too tight would probably seize in the first 20-minute. Fit too tight, they could keep the engine from turning more than 2200 rpm. Note- CC service bulletin said a break in period is 2.5 hours minimum. CC said its broken in when t...

sprinkle v. flooding
Put a sprinkler(s) under the boat when on the trailer? Let it run until the bottom tightens up.
Water weighs 8lbs per gallon. Imagine 20 gallons (160lbs) of load on the planking's screws (nails). Yikes.

We've seen an old Tahoe boatworks storing runabouts (original bottoms) for decades. Usually, two weeks before the customer arrives, the boatworks puts this runabout on a gantry (2) suspending the runabout (in the water) at the dock (can't sink on the gantry). H2O Pressure is outside pressing in. Boa...

Hi Al, The hole is just big enough for the light wire. That fit is tight; I've never taken water on through that hole. And, that's a good thing. One time, on the Delta with Easterly winds at 25-30 and the tide was ebbing to the West. Not good. Running with seas the height of the Razz freeboads we'd ...

Hi Mark, Speaking of the wandering thread...........how is your CC17'BB coming along? Its unusual to have adjacent BBs (71923/71924). Best to you. My engine is on the bench ready to go back in. Need to tidy up for 2010 with bright coats and various adjustments. Cheers. Jerry http://s3.postimage.org/...

Gord, Nice innitial set up. On the K series we use the timing light on the flywheel. Is that possible on the WD? With the K idling, rotate the distrubutor 1/8" and the engine slows 100 rpm. Move the other way 1/8" and the idle increases. In a runabout (unclear in a cruiser) when wide open and planin...

Dale, Thanks for the reminder re cooling flow in a WB......I'm limited to the K series. The thermostat should be the first part replaced. Start with the cheap stuff first. Melting a (aluminum) piston requires temps over 1200 degrees. I can't see 1200 degrees from water jacket/gasket problems. I'll p...
