Re: WI area - wood source
I am restoring a '48 Deluxe and it does have 7/16" Cedar planking on the bottom and 3/8" Mahogany on the topsides and deck. Conventional wisdom is that this was a result of wood shortage after WW2. The accepted standard for restoring these boats seems to be using 1/2" planks all around. The thinner ...

Re: Navigation / Anchor Switch Wiring
Hey Mark, Sorry for any confusion, I drew the schematic quickly. The drawing actually shows the switches in the off position, the line between the 2 anchor light switch poles is not an electrical connection but is an arrow meant to show they are both part of the same Anchor switch. The only way the ...

Re: Navigation / Anchor Switch Wiring
Tom, I believe you will need to isolate the wires going to the nav light and the stern light so there isn't a back circuit between them. This would require a double pole double throw switch for the Anchor light along with a couple of jumper wires by the switches. The attached image shows both switch...

It looks like something was rubbing on it and wore a hole in it. Could it have been put there to protect the wood from whatever was rubbing like maybe throttle linkage?

The company that did the original castings for CC is still in business. I purchased a replacement strut for my boat from them in 2015 and they were very helpful. Here is their contact info: Algonac Marine Cast, LLC www.algonaccast.com Factory: 9300 Stone Road Algonac MI 48001 810-794-9391 I don't kn...

With the boat on the trailer, I would have someone grab the rudder and move it side to side while you watch the linkage in the boat starting at the rudder arm and working forward. That should show you where the play is.

Jim,
A trick I use in auto restorations is to coat the metal and rubber with dish detergent as a lubricant and rotate the rubber as you force it onto the metal.
Good luck,

Why not put a shim of the proper thickness between the engine mount and block on one side and just redrill the one hole for the other side.

Re: 1956 Continental Crash pad details
Steve, I would be skeptical of using a vinyl from a retail store. Unless it is sold specifically as a marine vinyl, it most likely won't have the UV resistant properties necessary for the marine environment. You wouldn't want to spend all that time and work only to have it fade and crack in a year o...

Re: Changing ampmeter to a voltmeter
Are you sure your Voltmeter is calibrated correctly? With the ignition on and the meter showing 8 volts, connect your multimeter to the voltmeter terminals to confirm the reading. If it is 12 volts then your Voltmeter is off, if it is 8 volts then you have a high resistance connection somewhere betw...

Re: 5200 Bottom & CPES clarification
I also bought a gallon of the Sandusky 9605 but after painting the stringers, I found it had too much of a purple hue so it did not match the original CC bilge color at all. I took a piece of my boat's interior wood with original bilge paint that had never been exposed to light and had my local Sher...

Re: 5200 Bottom & CPES clarification
It is my understanding that you do not want a heavy layer of bilge paint so that moisture can still migrate out of the wood. I have been putting just one coat of oil based bilge paint with no primer, as the CPES acts as a primer.
Not sure if that is correct, I would like to hear opinions.

I add almost a 1/8" additional depth when drilling white oak. Then I dip the threads of the screw in a small cup of dishwashing detergent as a lubricant. That eliminated the snapping problem both going in and coming out.

Re: What model and year do I have?
Russ, I agree with you that it appears to be a 17' Deluxe Runabout. Somebody stamped a D instead of R which would make the serial # R17-1799. Since they made a total of 1880 of them through July 1950, it would make yours a late 1949 or early 1950. You should have the instruments in the center of the...

Re: 1931 Model 199 - Generator Cut-out to Ammeter
Russ, Here is my response to your question on the Danenberg forum, I will add that the purpose of the ammeter in this circuit is to show the current flow between the generator and the battery which is why both wires are +: I would follow the connections described on the label. In your photo you have...

Re: KLC Engine year
A lot of CC engines have a casting date somewhere on the engine. I have seen them on the side of the block or on the top of the head or on the exhaust manifold. That will give you an idea when it was manufactured. My KBL engine has dates on the head and manifold.
Good luck,

On the exploded view, the ring contact is labeled #50 and the wiper contact is labeled #27. You should print out the exploded view and document on it the sequence and location of each part as you disassemble it. As an alternative, if the wire looks OK right at the bottom of the light, you could sold...
