sounds like either fuel delivery issue or lack of spark at higher load&speed.

the ski boat I had had one temp gauge and a red idiot light. gauge monitored eng temp on one head and the red light would light if the other half of the engine overheated.

Re: MCL Flywheel Timing Mark

the timing mark on the MCL is a small dimple that looks like it was done with a drill bit.
are you sure you have the correct flywheel? the MCL wheel is flat with no step in it like the other M series engines.

I wonder if the resistor mounted under the dash is to drop the voltage to the instruments?
the original gauges would be 6 volt.

Re: Removing starter

remove the oil line, then use a 6 point box wrench on the fitting.
It should come right out.
I use liquid teflon sealer on the pipe threads when re installing.
don't over tighten the fitting, they are hard to find.

Re: Prop shaft coupler removal

I have used the slide hammer method numerous times over the years.
it works great! only caution is to stop as soon as the shaft clears the coupling so you dont jam the shaft key into the packing nut.
best to have a helper watching the coupling while you run the slide hammer.
takes about 10 min.

I would use silver solder on the exhaust pipe.
it is much stronger and should hold up to the heat and vibration much better than conventional solder.

Re: water leak Model K

I had to drill and tap the drain hole to 1/4" pipe thread.
the original hole was 1/8" pipe. it has rusted to the point where the valve wouldn't stay in.
the 1/4" valve works great.
be careful when drilling ,the cylinder wall is very close behind the drain hole.

Re: Gas tank restorayion

There are several company's that sell fuel tank sealers.
I have used POR-15 sealer kits several times with excellent results.
kits cost about $100.00. kit includes chemicals to clean and etch the tank.
have one boat that I sealed about 15 years ago and it still is working fine.

Re: 59 chris craft ski boat repower

if you do the 350 conversion I would add an engine oil cooler. the 350 generates a lot more heat than the 283 and the oil gets very hot. I have run this conversion in a ski boat and after 6 to8 miles of running the oil pressure would drop to 10 psi. would stop and let the engine idle for 10 min and ...

Re: Zebra Mussels

the problem with zebra mussels starts when the boat sits in the water unused for extended periods of time. then the larva will enter the cooling system and grow into an adult. then the cooling intake and engine passages are full of shells. starting and running the engine will kill them but the shell...

Steve,
Most of the remoter filters I have used use a ford/chrysler filter number.
Summit Racing has the filter housings and 1/2 oil line you will need.
NAPA should have all the fittings to hook it up.They can probably get the filter housing and hose also.

I would pull the access cover on the oil pan, after draining the oil and see if there is a buildup of sludge and gunk in the oil pan. if it looks clean then add the filter and the Brad Penn oil. the filter should pick up any dirt that gets flushed out by the detergent oil. might want to change oil an...

I would disconnect the batt wire at the coil and install a jumper wire from the coil directly to the battery. start the engine.
if the engine continues to run check the wiring and ign switch for a bad connection or broken wire.

sound like you have stick or leaking check valves in the pump.
were the valves replaced when you rebuilt the pump?
at an idle you should see very little fuel movement in the sediment bowl as the engine is not using much fuel.

you need to use a marine grade socket with the proper bulb. when you get back to the boat, without starting the engine see if you can turn the prop shaft by hand or with a pipe wrench. it should turn fairly easily.if not I suspect you may have a burned forward clutch. when they burn up the plates will warp and lock up the output shaft so its always in forward...

Wellcraft built some Scarabs with lamborghini engines in the 80s
from what I read MerCruiser imported 300 engines for use in offshore racing.

you would think there still has to be some of these engines around.
