Re: What's Your Key Chain of Choice?

A great read is "The Marlinspike Sailor" by Hervey Garrett Smith. Wonderfully illustrated for all types of ropework. Monkey's Fist, fenders, rope mats, canvas work etc. Great winter projects that accent any vessel.

I've had great results with Epiphanes Gloss Clear. No sanding between coats if re-coated w/in 72 hours and can be re-coated in 24 hours. Sand final coats and top coat with Epiphanes.

You might try a local big-rig truck supply store. Mobile Fleet Supply (MFS) custom cut the proper core and supplied me with both ends for less than $15. Has worked flawlessly since.

While I post very little, the Boat Buzz has been invaluable to me and my projects. The knowledge that is out there and shared has prevented many a mistake and streamlined the process on many occasions. Mark - Thanks for the detailed explanation. It makes good sense to have the boat swelled, cut to bare wood, then fill the new seam with 5200. The Square D switch pictured is a 200 amp, 250 V Transfer switch. Typically the "Load" is connected to the center terminals, and the two "Supplies" are con nected to the upper and lower terminals. Thus if you put the switch in the "Up" position, you supply the "Load" from one source of power, and wh...

Some old tools are new again. I've found that an Easydriver ratcheting driver works well for "feeling" the removal of old screws. Tom Frye's post is spot on. The long bow stop padded boards are a great help when you retrieve your boat on launches of different angles. A steep angle launch will place the bow of your boat near the bottm of the bow stop. As you pull up the launch the bow will rise and be in the proper position for...

My 58, 17' Sportsman's kingplank and center rear deck board is "blonde", but not stained blonde. The wood is left unstained and the varnish was applied directly to it. The natural color of the varnish gives a surprising light color to the wood. Good luck with your project. - SteveH

Steve - From my research on this forum and other aeas, I think that the CPES treatment will probably be the best for preserving the wood.
