Replacing Exhaust Manifolds - 350FLV Thru Hull XK19
I have a small drip from the port side exhaust manifold, get worse under load. What is a good source for a replacement? Does this need to be original equipment or are there aftermarket suppliers? Thanks, Tom

Re: Floor Drain
When I purchased the boat from dustoff135 on this forum, Patrick had replaced the original vinyl with this nautolex product, here's the link from Patrick's thread: http://www.defender.com/product3.jsp?path=-1|2276179|2276198|2276202&id=23612 . Sandstone was the color used in mine, a good match to th...

Re: Floor Drain
HI Chad, thanks for the response. I used douglas fir for the main floor frames running fore/aft, with mahongany crossmembers. I applied several coats of an oil base paint to the framing. My fiberglass stringers had good size holes molded in near the transom for draining the outer bilge compartments....

Floor Drain
I'm finishing up the replacement of the floor in my 71 XK19. The original floor was three piece plywood, over a wood frame. I've replaced the framing and glassed to the two side pieces of flooring to the hull. The original floor was covered in vinyl, each section wrapped so there was a seam on each ...

Re: De-Winterizing XK19 After Five Years
I purchased douglas fir to replace the floor framing for my XK 1 1/2" x 2 1/2", which will get covered with marine plywood. Plan to paint both sides of the plywood. There appears to be pros/cons with the best way to treat the framing - encapsulate or not. Is there any issue with not painting or enca...

Starter, Flooring, Stringers
So I drove an hour to the nearest alternator shop and they managed to recondition the starter. Charles - you were correct in that once the engine starts the flywheel speed should disengage the starter gear. I'm hoping to be in a position to crank the engine for the first time next weekend. This week...

Re: Best Place for Online Marine Parts
I was able to disassemble the starter. It appears the pinion is stuck in the out position.

350FLV Starter
I managed to pull the starter out this afternoon - contorted in positions that my 47yo body didn't appreciate. When rotating the engine manually from the crank I could hear a clicking from the starter. With the starter out and 12v to the battery side, and 12v to the solenoid, ground in place, I hear...

Re: Best Place for Online Marine Parts
I may be shopping for a starter soon. Is there something unique about a marine starter (it appears to have a cc tag on it)? I don't have it out yet so I haven't had a good look, but the solenoid setup doesn't look familiar. Can I go to the local auto store and buy a starter for a Chevrolet 350 - 197...

Re: Best Place for Online Marine Parts
Thanks for the names Tom. I was hoping to lookup the impeller by application but no such luck. I'll pull mine this weekend to get measurements.

Re: De-Winterizing XK19 After Five Years
Ok, so the main portion of the floor is out - the three sections that start under the instrument panel and end just past the rear seats. The middle portion is six feet in length instead of eight, like each side. Does anyone know if that should be eight as well? It just leaves a hole under the middle...

Re: De-Winterizing XK19 After Five Years
Thanks for the insight Chad. I got on the phone this morning as was able to find 5/8 locally but no 1/2. I will go with the 5/8 as no one wants to special order 2-3 sheets. Did you find any spacers underneath the floor at the edge or did the floor rest on the fiberglass hull? What wood did you use f...

Re: De-Winterizing XK19 After Five Years
The floor measures 1/2" thick plywood. 3/4" marine grade is readily available here. Does anyone see any problem with using the thicker plywood, other than the added weight? The original floor appears to be glassed in at each side. My plan is to use a cutoff wheel to cut the fiberglass as it turns ho...

Re: De-Winterizing XK19 After Five Years
Great to hear from you Patrick - it is your old boat. Not too long after purchasing it I was unexpectedly sent overseas for five years. A great thing for our family, but the two casualties appear to be the boat and the house (five years of renters). Do you know what type of wood was used for the 1x2...

Re: De-Winterizing XK19 After Five Years
So it turns out I have big problems. I uncovered the boat for the first time in 5 years today. It was stored inside a sealed barn with boat cover. The fiberglass looks fine but every inch of wood is rotten, to the point where if you touch or stand on it, it disintegrates. The flooring and rear seat ...

Re: De-Winterizing XK19 After Five Years
Thanks for the advice. Does the outdrive take the same oil as the engine? I hadn't been a boat owner for very long before I stored the XK five years ago. Where's the best place to buy parts for the Volvo Penta 250 online? In the one and only season I used the boat the u-joint let loose and I believe...

De-Winterizing XK19 After Five Years
I winterized my XK five years ago before moving overseas. I drained the fuel from tank and carb, fogged the carb and cylinders, put antifreeze in the cooling system and put fresh oil in. I had only planned on being gone for 2 years so the storage was longer than expected. The boat was kept in an enc...

Sounds like I may have to test the manifolds off of the boat - if I get to that point. I did get the boat in the water this weekend - ran fantastic. I did notice an occasional hint of steam coming from the exhaust. It seemed to always be on one side or the other. I would have guessed the high side d...

Hi Ron, Thanks for the note. I haven't had it in the water yet this year but hope to do so in the next few weekends. At the end of last season I put a can of sea foam while working through a hesitation/carburetor issue. I understand that may cause smoke/steam as well - if so, I'll have to burn throu...

Can Water Get Into Engine From Exhaust Manifolds
My 1971 XK19 appears to be running fine, but the oil was milky. Compression tests today showed 155psi to 170psi. I've replaced the intake manifold gasket. Is it possible that water can get into the cylinder via the exhaust manifold? Any way to test these?
Thanks, Tom
Thanks, Tom

XK19 Milky Oil, Good Compression
My 1971 XK19 has the 350FLV. While changing the oil for winterizing I noticed my oil was slightly milky. I performed a compression test: 135-165 psi. If I had a bad head gasket I would have expected much lower numbers on one or more cylinders. This is my first boat, so I'm not terribly familiar with...

350 FLV Hesitation
I have a 71 XK19 with a 350 FLV. From idle to immediate 50% throttle (pulling a skier up), the boat will surge, momentarily drop out, and pick back up and accelerate fine. The accelerator pump appears to be doing it's job (visual). The ignition has been replaced with a Mallory E-spark electronic ign...

I'm replacing the dipstick tube on my 71 XK19 with a 350 FLV. Can I buy parts at a local autoparts store for an LT-1 small block or do I need marine engine parts resources? The dipstick tube is sandwiched between the exhaust manifold and the valve cover. The old one was kinked and wouldn't allow che...

XK 19 Steering
I had my XK19 (Volvo Penta 250 outdrive) out for the first time for a test run. I thought the steering was a little "jerky" at times, at speed. At idle and it was very smooth. While under way it seemed to have some play, and at times, would jerk the boat. I believe this has the cable type steering, ...

I tried to obtain an original stern light for my 1971 XK19 and it came down to college for the kids or the stern light. Does anyone have a source for an aftermarket stern light that will fit this boat. I believe it's 11/16" at the base. The light doesn't need to be fancy, just plug in to the existin...

Hi Bret,
Thanks for the info. I haven't actually run the boat yet as I just bought it last weekend. In the next few weeks I'll do some basic troubleshooting and post my results here. I'll pay particular attention to the limit switches. Thanks, Tom

1971 XK 19 Trim Motor
I recently bought a 1971 XK19 with the 350FLV and Volvo Penta drive. The previous owner indicated that the fuse for the trim motor keeps blowing when operated from the switch on the dash. The owner further indicated that the motor works fine when wired directly to battery. I will begin troubleshooti...
