Carroll - That KLB131 was completely rebuilt in 2005 by Jim McNeilly in Seattle, WA. When the 1952 Riviera 18' restoration was successfully completed by Mike Mayer (at Lake Oswego Boat Co.) in 2012, before Mike installed the KBL back in the Riviera (for judging purposes at Lake Tahoe) Mike repainted...

Carroll - If you want to simply send the KBL out and get it back as a complete turn-key engine, ready to re-install in your boat, I say you are on the right track. There are a number of qualified engine shops in the USA (like VanNess, etc) that can do this, including testing it and running it in for...

If you are planning to ship the engine on a crate via a transport company to the USA and back most of the cross border transport companies offer customs brokerage as part of their service. You may have to do some basic paperwork to ID the engine serial number, etc. If you are delivering it yourself,...

Based on the comments in this thread - It's now approximately three months since most club members in the USA received their Brass Bell Volume XXXVIII, Number 1 in the mail. Have the other Canadian club members received their copies yet? I have not. My most recent version of The Rodder's Journal mag...

I agree with Pete, having some experience with this, shipping via FedEx is a good way to go in terms of making sure the guages arrive safely in the US and in terms of dealing with US / Canadian Customs both directions. Just be prepared to do some minor / additional paperwork at the local FedEx shipp...

Even today, although less dramatic, methods for replacing bottoms can still vary from shop to shop, and by area - and of course by the type of boat, restoration objectives and restoration philosophy the restorer / owner have in mind. I have noticed over the last few years that some restorers still a...

Interesting discussion. When referring to old wooden boats that were glassed over many years ago, you have to ask the question "What motivated the owners (at the time) to use this method?" Was it cost? (vs complete bottom replacement) Was it the best technology at the time? Was 3M 5200 or West Syste...
