Re: Re-power 283/MRD "283" with Marine 350

Update: after searching for a replacement 283 and a marine 350, decision made to build a marine 350 at my local speed shop. Will take it one step at a time, calling around for advice from boat experts as necessary, and hope to be back at the dock by the end of August. Hoping all the support items (s...

Re: Loud valves, adjustment needed?

Adding to the advice, recommend you investigate which valve(s) is/are suddenly making this noise. All of them? Just one side? I’d pull the cover(s) and check it out. Better yet, get a qualified mechanic to check it out at the dock. I hope it’s minor!

Changing to Heat Exchange System

I've a water-cooled 283 in a 1964 19' Sportsman. The problem is I like to play in brackish water. Has anyone upgraded to heat exchange system and care to share some pointers? Any cons? One source for parts I've discovered through searching is that of www.mrcool.us. Any other good sources, please adv...

Re-power 283/MRD "283" with Marine 350

I've a 1964 19' Sea Skiff Sportsman, original engine & configuration (one rebuild back in 2010). Water entered the system through a failed manifold gasket and the engine is very sick (I kept power on it for over an hour into the trouble to get home). The subsequent leak down test was dismal. Very lo...

Re: 283 Intake Manifold Forward Flywheel

Great advice. Thanks to you both. Jim, I do have those wye fittings available and will install the water temperature senders there, in those lines from the head. I do have the cast iron intake manifold with the water chambers. Can you help me to understand the design concept of having one open gaske...

283 Intake Manifold Forward Flywheel

]Hello, I've replaced a cracked head on my 1964 283 and getting it all back together. I believe the replacement gaskets for this intake manifold serve to seal out all water intake, such that no coolant enters the intake manifold. This makes sense because of the dual water pump concept feeding water ...

Re: MBL water in oil!

Thanks for this advice. Just noticed my recently rebuilt 283 gained water in the oil (within the last hour of use). Still running fine. The water pump had not been rebuilt with the rest of the engine...so I am hoping its the culprit. Will pull that pump and look for the pool of water. I hope I find ...

Re: Failed Tachometer drive, '64 283 Sportsman

Success! Thanks for the responses and advice. The tach drive unit was gunked up and a good cleaning returned it to service. [] I suspected the problem was not in the cable since it had worked up to that point without issue. [] Receiving the info regarding the two shafts (tach and oil), I got brave a...

Failed Tachometer drive, '64 283 Sportsman

Hello! Enjoying a full day of boating in my '1964 19' Sea Skiff Sportsman I noticed the tach gauge misreading - it would fluxuate 500 rpm. Upon inspection of the drive assembly at the engine, I noticed that if I pressed down on the top of the drive unit (has a quarter-sized button) it would seem to ...

Re: Not getting fuel at higher speeds in choppy water

Thanks for the feedback. Will replace the old pump just in case it has a leak and see what happens. Nice to know of the electric option just in case. Thanks for the warnings of cut off switch. I would have overlooked that without your advice.

Re: Not getting fuel at higher speeds in choppy water

Good stuff here. Will double check to make sure I'm not sucking air. After all else fails, would anyone recommend installing an electric fuel pump? I've a similar issue with my refurbished 1964 19' sportsman (283). Been over the whole thing from tank to carb and still lose power under load at high s...

283 Water Cooling System - Hose Diagram

I'm restoring a 283 engine for a 64 Sea Skiff Sportsman and would benefit by a photo showing the proper connection of the water hoses from the pump to and from the manifolds.

Thanks.
