Alternative Wood Sealers?
I’m restoring a 1948 Chris Craft with new wood frames, keel, chines, bottom planking, etc. I'm installing the inner bottom now. Been using CPES to this point, but I’m looking for an alternative product primarily due to the solvents it off-gases. I don’t have a separate shop, so the restoration is ha...

That's not a U-22 hull
The lines are not right. The hullsides on the U-22 have considerable flare towards the bow, where that boat has none. The U-22 hullsides are curved (barrel) at the transom, and the transom itself is vertical from top to bottom.

The stuff my local dealer has labled as "Philippine" is the same wood you'd see used for interior trim, shelving, etc. in the home-...

Al, Here's a photo of the original bottom planking. I plan on sending a sample to the wood lab for identification, just to satisfy my curiosity. To be safe, I'd like to stick with the species that other restorers are using. http://upload4.postimage.org/1661498/Dscn2797400_733617.jpg I've read somewh...

Bottom planking species & grade selection
In the previous planking thread, the Jim Blake article in the latest Brass Bell was mentioned. It's a great article, and I've read it several times. However, he addresses selection of Philippine for topsides planking, decking, and the like, but makes no mention of bottom planking species or selectio...
