Re: 1947 18 foot utility restoration thread

Couple updates: My intake/exhaust manifold was cracked, so i sent that off to Crow Cast Welding, he's repairing that and looking like it will turn out really nice. The engine inspection went pretty well, bores were pretty worn, so we are going to have to go to 60 over on the pistons, there were some...

Re: Side plank seam repair

I posted a ton of pics in my restoration thread, but i ultimately decided to just replank it. Just easier and not that much money for the wood in comparison to everything else :)

Re: 1947 18 foot utility restoration thread

Here are my stock gauges back from Mark Clawson all redone, i also picked up a temp gauge. I just had a Stewart gauge, but wanted a Chris Craft one to match. He of course did a fantastic job with the repairs and the faces look brand new. My ammeter gauge never really worked and would jump or get stu...

Re: 1947 18 foot utility restoration thread

Here's some of the transom planks removed. I ended up planing those off since everything was bedded in 5200.

Port side is stripped, i need to route the starboard side tonight and then remove the 2nd strake and then that side will be done as well.

Re: 1947 18 foot utility restoration thread

Initial plank removal and unfortunately some rot i found near the sheer where a butt end was. Somone dug it out at some point and just tried filling it with 3m 5200, was a mess.

Re: finally removed my engines for the rebuild and seeking advice

I cleaned my bilge a few times after acquiring the boat. Nothing worked as well as hot water and dawn with a scrub brush. My engine had leaked a lot of oil, so it was a mess, and old leaves etc. I was shocked at how well the dawn worked compared to other things i tried. I had hot water in my garage ...

Re: WI area - wood source

This should probably be answered by the professionals so I'm stimulating some feedback from them. I'm not familiar with a documented "plank layout" for these boats. As long as your current planks are not patched/cobbled and the end joints are all staggered, I would keep them the same as they are. I...

Re: WI area - wood source

Hey all,

So i've made the decision that I will be replacing all the topside planks, just have found enough little things, it's not worth trying to save anything.

Was planning on going with red meranti, but if i'm replacing all the planks, should i be considering anything else?

-Thanks

Re: WI area - wood source

I guess the other thing i'm trying to figure out is how much wood and what lengths to order. In terms of what makes the most sense. I don't think i need anything over 12 feet and all are under 7" wide except for that top strake. I should check the drawings i got from Mariners, can't remember if the ...

Re: WI area - wood source

We have done a couple of 17' deluxe model Chris craft and always go to 1/2 inch planking. You are only talking 1/16th of an inch and it makes for a stronger boat and you don't have to worry about fairing if you frames are fair. I would go with 6/4 lumber re-sawn in half then plane to 1/2 inch thick...

Re: WI area - wood source

Dug in my research packet and found a scan of a the wood sizes and things.

Side planks are 1/2"
Bottom is 5/8"
Deck is 7/16"
Transom is 1/2"

At least that was original it looks like. I will still measure to see what was put on the 1st plank.

Re: WI area - wood source

Hey all, looking for recommendations on where people have gotten their wood from around the WI area. I will need to pick up some wood to replace old side planks probably in the next month. Also what is the recommended mahogany? According to Dan's book, looks like 6/4 resawn to 1/2" is appropriate. ...

Re: Side plank seam repair

OK, From one garage restorer to another. From what I'm gathering the bottom topside plank is bedded to the newer bottom (which it should be)and hopefully a new plank like the bottom wood. Please tell me yes... I highly recommend replacing all the topside planks since your right there. You can also ...

1947 18 foot utility restoration thread

It's about a boat out of water, so figured this was the appropriate place :) I figured it would be good to have everything in one place, not only for myself but others as well. After hundreds of hours of reading, videos and research, i feel like i have a good game plan for tackling our boat. I've al...

Re: WI area - wood source

Thanks, a bunch of searching looks like LL Johnsons is the closest "big" supplier around. I called and talked to Edensaw, they were great, but getting the wood all the way back here will be very expensive.

African is readily available, but i didn't figure that would be a good match for the boat.

Re: Crack in keel by rudder

Epoxy with some filler would be best. Make sure it's cleaned out and dry then mix up some west system epoxy and some 404 filler until its the consistency of peanut butter. Fill the crack completely, let it dry and then sand flat. So instead of routing out and putting a spline, you are saying just f...

Re: Side plank seam repair

So tearing into this, quite literally. My splash rails are bedded in 5200 so removing them pretty much destroyed the planks underneath. Also the main plank I need to repair, which is the 2nd plank after the chine, the bottom edge was bedded in 5200 from the bottom repair whenever that was. That’s cl...

I have an original operating manual and maintenance/parts manual. So if anything needs anything from them just ping me.

The maintenance manual is the full tear down and specs manual.
