Bottom paint primer questions

Postby njanous » Fri Jan 13, 2012 12:17 pm

Quick question for all the experts out there -

I am about to order the primer and bottom paint for my recently completed 5200 bottom. Do I really need to buy a thinner to reduce the viscosity of the 1959 copper paint before application? I hear some people use it and others don't. Any advice or opinion would be much appreciated.

First make sure you bottom is fair and clean the 2 to 3 coats of CEPS, I put on all coats in one day. Then I apply 2 coats of Interlux 2000E barrier coat, sand with 120 grit and apply 2 coats of bottom paint.

You only need thinner if you apply the paint over bare wood (like the factory did).

You should prime it with Interlux 2000E, then two coats of paint full strength.

Thank you for all your advice.

I just puttied all the holes, faired the bottom and will be CPESing is later this week. The plan is 4 coats of 2000e and 2 coats of 1959 copper.
