Step Pad

Post by WoodenRookie » Wed Jan 13, 2010 10:36 am

I found this: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chris-Cr ... 3efbebf4ea

Is that wood insert original, interestingly I have found the exact same board material on my 4 step pads. Mine were recovered with marine carpet but the wood is exactly like the ebay listing. Was there wood used under the "logo"ed CC pads? I always assumed this wood was just used after the original wore out. Is this what was under the CC rubberized logo piece?

The wood (teak) step pads are correct for your boat. C-C started using these sometime in 1957.

I looked at the eBay listing and it shows the teak pads. Not to be confused with the mahogany wedges that are used under the rubber step pads. These were basically a shim, to compensate for the angle/curvature of the covering board, and to bring the rubber pad up to the correct height to fill the frame.

At first I thought you were referring to these wedges, then realized you needed actual wooden pads.

makes sense, so were these stained to match and varnished? I havent seen a 59 brochure but on the 60 brochure they sure look whiteish. Probably just colored for photo effect? tried to upload the brochure but "No decode delegate for this image format" its an adobe file extension

Bill, try your upload with a jpg, png, gif, bmp, psd, or tif. There is a 5mb file size limit on the uploads. PDFs and .ai (Illustrator) will not work, nor will .eps.

Bill,

unless you have conversion software it can't be done. It could be printed, scanned in as jpg and then posted. A lot of work and loss of clarity.

This is from a 1957 Equipment Catalog.

Image

as a technical footnote, if you have to do this from a pdf it's pretty easy. Just bring up the PDF and use the Vista "snipping tool" to cut the image you want and save it as a jpg. took me about 15 seconds to do this.

Here's the Continental from the 1960 catalog in the archive. I used Tom King's cool tool to nab it from the archive pdf file.

That was quick.

They're teak. The sunlight is right on them, look at the shadows. Also, every other color photo shows them plain as day.

Here is an untouched photo from 1958. Look at the ensign!

Here is a shot of a very original 1959 Capri, the wood was unfinished and teak if left un-treated and bare is a natural non-skid surface when wet, this is why most decks on large boats are teak. This boat had two small oval head screws in the step to keep the wood from moving.

Brian, you have been doing this too long. You are supposed to be looking at the girl, not the flag!

Thanks Mike, My holes (In teak) align up with the chrome outside screw holes so they hold both the teak and chrome in place. I would love to see additional pics of that interior.

Brian, you have a good point there. Probably harder to restore her to "as new" condition than the boat! :P

I shouldn't admit this but I went to the photo, looked at the step pads, noticed the cute girl and forgot to look at the flag.

Funny sometimes, isn't it, when different people look at the same thing, what they see and what they don't see. BTW, Al, a very nice article on you in the latest brass bell. I think the positive energy you put into the buzz is one of the most significant factors in its success!

Wow, Don,

Thank you very much for the great complement. I have enjoyed Boat Buzz from it's first day and hope to be around for a while longer.

Brian, that girl is probably only a year or two my senior and might still be an eye-catcher at my age. I just finished registering for our 50 year reunion, Class of 1960, East St. Louis Senior High School.

Bill, Don and I are harmless, you can feel safe sitting with us any time. Just wear ear plugs.

Al
